TO MUCH RED WINE

Vanderbilt just called and said that my blood was getting dangerously thin. The nurse had come and taken it this morning. Last week it was to thin but borderline. So I have been eating the forbidden green veggies for a week. But when the Vanderbilt nurse asked what I was doing differently, I had to admit that maybe three glasses of wine every night for the last 5 nights might have had something to do with it. My daughter Sherron is here and she and I have been embiding every night. Before Coumidine, three glasses of wine would not have been a problem. Anyway she asked if I was going to continue to drink and I regrettfully said that I would behave and not have any the rest of this week. They will check again next Monday. Darn just as I was beginning to feel like a human being again.

Well, dang! Do the 'forbidden' green veggies thin your blood too? Does the nurse know you were eating them too? Or are they supposed to help? I am not sure I am understanding that part. They can't adjust the Coumadin dosage to accommodate a glass or ? of wine? Gee, maybe you don't need the Coumadin - just drink the wine?? Seriously though, I had a friend who was on Coumadin for a period of time and she had to be very careful of salads and veggies or things would get out of balance. So, you take care of yourself!

Shucks. There are alcohol free wine imitators. My buddy use to sell it at the farmers market. here. The one I tried years ago was actually quite nice.

Aww, that's too bad, Lucile! My MIL is on coumadin and has to avoid all green veggies too. It's really limiting... especially since she has a significant weight problem, which makes the heart problem worse, but how can you lose weight if you can't eat any veggies?!?!?

I didn't know about the wine though. That would stink. She is a TOTAL non-drinker anyway, so that part doesn't bother her!

Well I went for months and didn't have any until the nurse told me that the acohol would help thin my blood. They were testing two times a week and kept adjusting the coumadine dosage. My blood was to thick. The green veggies have a lot of Vit. K and that thickens the blood. So, I didn't eat any green veggies. I was having a glass of wine every night and taking my coumadine and things had finally balanced out and they went to once a month testing. Then last week (before Sherron got here) my blood began to be to thin and then with the three glasses of wine I really overdid. Anyway I got to eat broccoli and cucumbers tonight with my dinner and the glass of water while everyone else had wine. Dave if it is fake wine I would just as soon have water. lol

You are right about keeping weight off. I have gained weight. Usually in the summertime I lived off of salads and fresh veggies. Darn lettuce has Vit K. So I have been pretty much meat and potatoes and an additional 10 lbs.

All I can say is YUCK! I really don't care about the alcohol part... I just like the taste of good wine. I've never tasted any of those alcohol free wines that even come up to the quality of BAD wine!

Lucile, I'm with you on the fake wine! I HAVE found a substitute I like though... (I have to limit wine to no more than a glass a week because of my RA meds) I found that pomegranate juice has a nice, rich, not too sweet taste. I drink it in a wine glass with my dinner, and like it LOTS better than the alcohol free "wines"!

I might try that Karen. You would think that I would prefer the wine of the south--iced tea. But I don't care for it either.

That's because you drink that horrid "sweet tea" down there!
