Need some advice

It's been a while since I've on the forum but today when Lucky had a medical issue I knew exactly where to go to for advice (here)! Everyone has been so helpful here I am hoping someone can help me with my new delima.

Warning...if you are eating, you might not want to read the rest of this right now. So I got up this morning and Lucky had a bloody mucassy (sp?) mess on his bottom. I immediately took him to the vet and we believe that Lucky ate a dead baby bird (the local neighborhood cat has been terrorizing a bird's nest on my front porch fern). Yesterday I saw Lucky pick something up and before I could get to him I thought he dropped whatever it was. But I'm thinking now that it was a dead baby bird. The doctor gave Lucky an antibiotic shot and some anti-nausea medicine. Lucky seems to be doing a lot better but now I'm worried about the mess on his behind. The vet tried to clean it but Lucky squealed so bad that the vet had to stop. So Lucky now has a tangled mess on his backside and I have no idea what to do. He's already super sensitive about being cleaned down there that it's hard as it is, but now it's impossible. I don't want to hurt him while he's feeling bad, but I also don't want it to become so tangled down there that it becomes infected and will hurt twice as bad when I'm able to get it cleaned. I snuck a warm washcloth under his tail for about 10 seconds before he caught on and now he's hiding across the room.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should do?

Thanks!

When Lucky is feeling a bit better use a good bit of corn starch and brush out any tangles you can do it a bit at a time. If the hair is pink or red it will stay that way for a good bit of time, it will not hurt Lucky. You will need to keep this area clean and no treats with red dye in them (you can tell by the color of the treat), when I bath I use a paste of baking soda and water and leave it on for two minutes. It takes some time but it will get lighter over time about 6 weeks. My Yogi came home from being boarded with this problem after a month it has faded and you can hardly see it with all the other hair. Best of luck and hopefully no more late season baby birds, snacks.

Fill the sink, tub or whatever with warm water and either let him sit in it, or just keep pouring it on his rearend like you're rinsing his hair. That should loosen it up so you can get it out. Also, a little shampoo helps to soften it.

Thanks! I was thinking of trying to sneak some antibiotic cream back there and try to keep it moist for a day or so until I can wash it. But then again, it probably won't be a good idea to keep it moist...it might get infected. I just know how much he hates to be bothered "back there" and I'm dreading either trying to clean it myself or having to take him in. I groom him myself and occassionally take him in for a sanitary cut depending on how honery he is that day. I guess I just need to stop worrying about it and deal with it in a couple of days. Can you tell who has who trained here? I nearly jump out of my skin everytime he squeals at me when I'm cleaning him up. He makes it sound like I am just killing him. : (

Can the two of you get into a nice warm bathtub of water together for a little soak?? Get some conditioner on that area perhaps??( might be kind of fun...get a little rubber ducky for some distraction.
poor lucky...hope it gets better soon!

Some "tub time!" I never thought of that. Maybe we'll do it tomorrow when he gets up if he's feeling better. Great idea!

If this was your two year old child that had a messy bottom and didn't want you to clean, what would you do? Like another said put down in a tub or sink and wash good. Use conditioner to help with the matts and then you can detangle when he feels better.

When McGee has a messy bottom I spray it with warm water to loosen it up and then gently clean with a wet soapy washcloth. The warm water spraying on it seems to feel good to him, too.

I would get him in the tub right away and rinse off any residue (warm water and mild soap). Around his anus lightly rub, several times a day, either aloe or vitamin e liquid. After a day or so, it won't be so sore and you can deal with the tangles.

I'm sorry Luckys bottom hurts. If he is dirty he diffidently needs to be cleaned off. If he has a bunch of mats I might consider just cutting them out. Maybe a groomer this time so you don't have to be the bad guy.
