Collars?

With everything I have done and do to keep Tillie healthy and safe, she doesn't wear a collar. This has been nagging me in the back of my mind for months and months now and recently came to the forefront as I found and returned 2 dogs to neighbors over the past week! 1 was the sweetest little B&W 5 month old shih tzu and the other a 9 month old german shepard/lab mix ... both had collars on with tags. I returned both of them before the owners even KNEW they were missing!
Tillie does have a microchip and does wear her tags when her harness is on and we are on a walk or out and about. But, do you think she should be wearing one ALL the time? Do your dogs always wear collars??
also, IF i do decide to have her wear a collar, is there a collar out there that won't matt her? I've heard about the rolled leather collars... does anyone HAVE one of those on their hav and does it REALLY not matt them? I'm not sure if Tillie will be in full coat someday, but her hair is about 4-5 inches long right now and I have no intention of cutting her down anytime soon.
and I REALLY don't want to deal with her whole neck matting because of a collar... what are your thoughts!?

Tammy,

Keeper does not wear a collar. It is easy to have thorax damage in the small breeds and we even go to training in a halter. Keeper wears his halter all day and now has a short cut, but we didn't have much of a problem with matting even when he was in full coat.
His halter is just a simple one you can buy in many pet stores. You could certainly put tags on the harness if you wished but we don't. He does have a microchip.

If you would like a collar for everyday wear, rolled leather is typically best. No collar will cause NO matting, but most agree this does the least amount!

Mine don't wear collars, but if they need to wear one for any period of time it's rolled leather. I have martingale style (no-slip/sighthound collars) if I am just going out with them quickly, easy to slide on, they can't back out. I really dislike halters, especially on small breeds (they're based off halters for horses who have much stronger necks), but everyone finds what works for them.

Keeper wears a harness all the time? Tillie is no longer in a puppy cut, so I know that isn't an option for her, because of matting.
I would still put her harness on for walks or classes, she does have a delicate throat and I do not want to risk damaging her...
I'm just wondering if she should wear a collar all the time, just for safety sake, in case she gets out somehow...?
Thanks Sally! so the rolled ones really STOP the matting around the neck??

thanks for the link! I wonder if PetCo would have these IN the store? or if this is just an online product?
Sounds like most of you don't keep collars on them all the time... so maybe I don't need to change anything?
Maybe I just want to shop.

Tessa wears a collar all the time in the house and outside. The reason - I have a small jingle bell on it and that way I know where she is and where I can find her (especially helpful when she decides not tell me that she needs to go potty.) I also did this when Cooper was a pup.

Tessa sleeps on our bed and has since the day we brought her home. If she needs to go out during the night, the bell actually wakes one us up so we can take her out. I do have a harness, but find it a bit of a pain to put on and take off. I do not have any tags on her yet, but that is becuase every one I find seems way too big. Tessa still has her puppy coat and so far, matting hasn't been a problem.

Cooper doesn't wear a collar in the house but only because he does mat around his collar. I think it's whatever works for you and whatever your pup gets used to.

Whisky wears her collar all the time, but she hates her tags and chews them like crazy. I wish I could get her to stop doing that.

Baxter always wears a collar -- so I can hear his tags. It is a cloth collar, which I have always kept loose. As he puppy coat grows out, I have noticed it is curling and -- maybe - starting to mat under it.
