Play Group "Experience"

Well, Kodi and I certainly had an "experience" today! Since we had to miss our local Hav play date this fall, I was feeling bad for Kodi that he hadn't had any chance to run around with a group of little dogs. So when I heard about a local small dog meet-up group, I decided to give it a try. It met in a rubber matted room at our local "pet resort".

I'll tell you, I don't want to HEAR about Havs being hard to potty train. There were dogs peeing and pooping all over the place!!! It was disgusting! And their owners were so matter of fact about cleaning it up that it was pretty obvious that this is just a fact of life.

Most of the dogs were Chihuahuas or Chi crosses with a couple of Pom crosses, a rat terrier and two Min Pins thrown in for good measure. There was also an unneutered Yorkie who spent the entire time trying to mount everything in the room.

I don't know if they just play differently than Havs or what. Kodi has always LOVED Havanese play dates, happily joining in with the others. I didn't see any aggression in this group... in fact they mostly wandered around ignoring each other and looking for places to pee and poop. But Kodi was very uncomfortable. He was drooling like crazy, and kept climbing up into my lap, even though the other dogs didn't seem to be paying any attention to him at all.

All in all, it wasn't a rousing success. I think we'll wait for Hav play dates!

That's the main reason I stopped going to the local dog park. It seemed more to be a "people" playdate than for the dogs. They hung out while the dogs just ran amok. Kodi and Shelby were never very comfortable being there, so I finally stopped going.

I apologize, but your description had me LMAO. Probably less funny living through it. It is amazing how all hav playdates I've witnessed have been so much fun for most of the participants. I've never been to one like yours.

Just to be clear, Geri, this wasn't a Hav play date. Every Hav play date I've been to has been wonderful! I just don't want to hear about how hard it is to house train Havs after seeing that lot!!!

Funny you should write about this since it's been on my mind. Henry loves his interactions with Ivyagogo's Hav, Gryff. They play like maniacs - chasing and wrestling and having a ball. He has also enjoyed playing with Lhasas, poodles, and Bichons. But when I have occasionally taken him to a dog park with lots of small dogs, I GET THE SAME REACTION AS YOU! He stands alone, watching the others run around, and ranges from totally uninterested to mildly afraid. He seems to especially loathe/fear Boston Bull Terriers and any kind of bulldog. Based on your comments I'm thinking maybe he just likes his own kind. Interesting.

It was funny, because Kodi does play with other dogs... His "cousins" are a Sheltie and a hound mix, and he loves to play with both of them. (though he doesn't like it when the hound mix gets too rough and flips him!) At agility, while we are putting equipment away, he plays with a Corgi as well as another Hav. (and used to play with a different Sheltie who has since moved away) His "best friend" is a German Shepherd, and when we go down to our town lake, he happily plays with any of the dogs who are down there. (the people who take their dogs down there for off-leash play are all very responsible, and the dogs are all very nice, ranging from a manchester terrier to a Newfie) But, of course, when he's down there, he's with his GSD friend, so maybe that helps him be more comfortable.

He hasn't had the opportunity to play off leash with any of the bull dog types, but there is a French Bull Dog in our obedience class, and Kodi has no problem with that dog in our classes. She just ignores him though.

Karen, I clearly understood that your experience had nothing to do with a hav playdate. I've just never experienced a dog park or anything like it, so have no frame of reference. Interesting though, how they have an affinity for each other - usually.

Oh, OK. I just didn't want to leave the impression that there were a bunch of Havies peeing and pooping all over the place!
