Cool Beamer at Puupy Class

Well.. today was beamers first puppy class. We enrolled him at the local PetSmart for this. Not sure if it seems to great?? I mean it gets him to see lots of differen types of puppies, so for socialization its great!

But for ctual training? not so sure. All the dogs just barks and run for each other. Can hardky even hear the instructor over all the crazyness of the puppies..lol I'm more worried about Beamer picking up bad behaviour from these dogs than anything!? A beagle puppy was going absolutley insane! He was biting the crap out of his 2 owners. They sprayed apple bitter right in his mouth, and he liked it!

Not to sure i'm so into this thing.. Maybe next weeks lesson will be better.. we shall see...

Holy Crap the Beagle liked the Bitter Apple!!! It's like "Give Me a Shot Of Bitter apple with a chaser of Coke"

Hopefully the second Class Goes Better. Doesn't sound too Professional. I wouldn't keep him in that class if I were you. Sounds pretty bad.

We started the beginner class at Persmart this past friday since there are only two of us in the class it wasn't too bad but I understand where you are coming from. I hope this fridays class is a little better also.

Your class is probably an hour long and if there are 10 dogs in there, your dog will get very little one on one training time. The chains aren't all that great for serious training however they are wonderful for socializing your dog and you do learn there but nowhere near as quickly or as in depth as you would hiring a private trainer.
Were you given a booklet that says what you're going to learn in each class with instructions on how to do the training? That's a great resource and can be used in advance of the next class. Then the instructor will give you tips about what you're doing wrong and help you understand why. One thing I saw over and over was people treating their dog after the dog broke the command. Be fast with the treats and give it to them while they're still in the position you asked for. If you tell them to sit, treat when that hiney is on the ground, not when they're starting to stand up.
As the classes go on, you should see the dogs under better control...and I would have muzzled the dog biting it's owner and suggested private classes for it and not sprayed bitter apple, but that's just my way of training. I've only had to muzzle one dog I was training and have only refused to work with one couple and their dogs after they called their dogs filthy names and kicked one of the dogs in front of me. Dogs can be a lot easier to train than their owners.

Wow, you're lucky. Sometimes they'll cancel classes with only 2 signed up for it. You'll have a lot of one on one time and will learn faster.

Lassy is a rough collie. I think there have been 9 of them and even though called Lassy, they're all males.

Even at my level, I think most training is for the person.... the dog learns at home without all the distractions. Then you take him in public or the show ring and just hope he remembers 50% of what he can do at home <BG> Don't worry about the class, I would just try to get a seat where you can hear the instructor and socialize Beamer!

Nico is just finishing up a class at PetsMart. We signed him up at PetsMart because it was convenient and they had a class starting right when we wanted to start and at a time that worked. The instructor is quite good and keeps good control of the class. There are generally 7 puppies in our class. I don't think it's the best training venue, but I think it's fine for socialization and for teaching the HUMANS the basics of what we need to know to work with him at home. After 7 weeks of class, Nico does sit, down, sit stay, down stay, come, down from standing and leave it fairly reliably if there aren't a ton of distractions. He's also pretty good on a loose leash. He's starting another class at a dog training club and will continue his training there instead of PetsMart, but I have no complaints about his puppy kindergarten class at PetsMart.
