Unhappy Chihuahua passed away, Havanese not wanting to eat

Our 14 year old chihuahua Paco passed away peacefully in his sleep last weekend. Our two-year old Havanese Lucy is definitely not quite acting like herself. She seems to be less active and hasn't been wanting to eat much. To be fair she's always been kind of a finicky eater but this morning I had to give her canned food (no kibble) to get her to eat breakfast.

For those who have lost a pet, what can I do or what can i expect for the next few days with Lucy? She definitely senses the sadness in the house and we're trying to do our best not to drown in our grief but when you've had a member of the family for over 14 years, it's impossible not to notice their absence.

My husband has already nixed the idea of getting another dog for at least a few years which I actually agree with. Having two dogs for our family was a bit of a handful.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sandy

I am so sorry for your loss of Paco. Poor Lucy losing her friend. I am sure with your love she will heal with time.

BTW I really don't see anything wrong with feeding her the canned food.

We all eat comfort food when a family member passes. I am sure that her canned food isn't as bad as some of the junk we eat when we are sad. I am so sorry for your loss.

TTFN,
Pam

It's always hard on all of us, two and four legged when a loved one crosses over. My heart goes out to you and your little Lucy as you learn to adjust in a world without Paco. Sending cyberhugs to you all. I've been there.

Thanks everyone. Lucy seems to be doing better today though I still see her sniffing around areas where Paco used to hang out. At least she seems to have her appetite back.

We went through some of Paco's things last night - little doggie sweaters, etc and i put together a bag to give to one of my employees who has a dachshund who's about the same size Paco was. I'm sure I'll feel better in time but it's definitely still feeling very raw right now. This morning I woke up and I swore I heard Paco coughing like he did every morning for the past few years because of his heart issues.

I'm just grateful for Lucy and her warm positive energy.
