Black hairs on a sable?

Karen's post got me to wondering about Ceylon's hair (again! lol). His breeder had classified him as a gold brindle but I am about 100% sure now he is not, and that he is a sable. But he has these dark hairs interspersed all over his back from neck to tail that (used to be) black all the way to the roots. When I just went to take a picture of this however, I noticed that some - not all, not even most, but some of the black hairs were now black almost all the way, but had a finger width's worth of blonde at the roots! like, a complete color change from one micrometer to another. And then, I found some that were black almost all the way, then had a finger width's worth of blonde close to the root, and then were again growing black at the roots!!! What is that??! Does anybody else have a hav with hair changes like that?

I took a picture to show how the hairs are sprinkled individually among his other hair (couldn't capture anything else). Along with the black hairs he also has darker apricot/fawn/gold hairs (not really sure how to classify the color) that also go down to the roots, interspersed in his blonder hair the same way the black ones are. They don't show up in the picture I took however, as the light and my poor picture quality don't show them. Is this just typical sable hair coloring? I thought that sables were tipped but had light-colored roots. I don't think it's ticking because it's just single random hairs sprinkled throughout, but, I really have no idea... he also has a little clump of dark apricot/fawn/gold hair growing at just one place on his shoulder. It's not very big, about 20-30 hairs I think, but is noticeably darker than anywhere else on him except for the black and except for the hair behind his ears. It's also new growth - about 2" long, whereas the rest of his fur is about 6-7" long in the area. So, that may be ticking, but if so, it's new... very interesting

Anyway, I'd be interested to know if this (either the sprinkling of hairs and/or the quick changes from dark to light, and then in some cases back again, in the same hair) is typical of sables, or what...

I don't know if it is typical but Ache is a sable and she has a LOT of black hair, even more than Ceylon. Let's see what others say...

Lizzie is a sable parti and has those black hairs down her back. Hers are mainly in her upper shoulder area. The hair there is different than the hair near her rump. Actually, when you posted pics of Ceylon's bath the other day he looked a lot like Lizzie.

I think Sable always has black hairs to start with on the ears and tail. As the hair there grows, it changes color, so once it's clipped that's the end of the black tips on ears and tail. What Sables we had always had the black hairs mixed in like that. Since we have worked on getting the curly gene out of our line, we have lost the Sable color.

It's funny, Blanchi is completely cream, except for one black hair.
