behavior when wearing a jacket

Anyone else have behavior changes when putting a jacket on their dog?

Oreo will freeze and go into a calm submissive state where he has no interest in anything and will find a place to lie down.

My sister's min schnauzer is even worse, it'll just freeze and not move a muscle, not even 1 step until the jacket is taken off.

Is this bad for Oreo?

Is it bad to use it as a calming tool?

It doesn't sound to me like it is calming them... It sounds like they are BEGGING for you to take it off. How important is it for him to wear it?

he actually wags his tail alot with it on so not sure what to make of it.

it's getting to the negative side of zero here.

I just spent the last week designing and making coats. Zoey has been my model she does the same thing she will just stand their she is particularly funny when I put a hood on her. Both maddie and Zoey act different for a little while then they forget its on and are ok. I also look at Zoey and right now she reminds me of a caterpillar a very fuzzy one and I'm wondering why am I making coats she has a nice one of her own.

Brody likes his and he likes his boots too. Maybe you need to slowly adjust him to it. Put it on him and just leave it on for a minute or two and take it off again and then treat him. And then work up to longer periods of time.

They do use those Thunder Shirts as a calming device, so my thinking is that a jacket might act fairly similar? I put a onesie on Augie after his neuter. I would notice a definite change in his activity when I would take it off so he could go out and potty in the wet grass without getting it all wet. He was much more calm with it on than when it was off.

I think Tracy's idea of slowly adjusting him to it sounds reasonable.

Mine used to do that with their jackets & boots when they were in the house. (Tess still walks funny with boots on in the house.) Once I get them outside they are fine. I agree, it may be something Oreo just needs a chance to get used to.

Also, isn't that basically the concept behind the Thunder Shirts used to calm dogs during thunder - a light compression jacket?

My daughter's dog, Bear, a chihuahua mix does the same. She just pretty much stands still and doesn't move much, other than tail wagging. When the jacket isn't on, she's an extremely active dog. I offered up the same theory about the thunder shirt to her.

Momo, on the other hand, is not bothered that way. At first, she tried to remove it, but, now she's ok with it.

Bumi does this. I just don't put any clothing on him. When is cold, he doesn't spend enough time out to cause any damage. Why torture his if he obviously doesn't like it?

When I put his collar on he drags himself all over the floor trying to get it off until he gives up Nd eventually forgets about it. I only put his collar on when we go out so is not a big deal for us.
