1st Dog Show.....

I live in VT and see that there is an all breed dog show in Fitchburg, MA in two weeks. Can someone tell me whether Saturday or Sunday would be better to go, to meet more Havanese and their owners? Does it make a difference? And, what's the best way to go about it? Act like a Groupie?! Is there one particular area that all the Havs will be in?

Thanks so much for your input.

The Fitchburg show is fun, and a lot of the N.E. Hav people go. When you arrive, get a show program, and this will tell you which ring, and the approximate time of the Hav classes. Be at ringside early, because the times really ARE approximate!

Don't talk to the participants while they are getting ready for their class, as they need to concentrate on what they are doing. But after the classes, you will find that most of the N.E. Hav breeders are very approachable and nice to talk to.

I won't be there... I'll be in Thailand! But make sure you bring your credit card or check book... there are lots of fun vendors to look at too!

There are a couple of forum members who might very well be going... I'll see if I can get them to weigh in!

I'm still a dog show newbie so I hope others will chime in, but I've been to two shows and the "spectators" all kind of floated around randomly, they all seemed to be getting a good kick out of it. If anyone is going you might want to find out from them what time the Havanese group will be presenting in the ring so you can at least see them in action. Most don't mind talking about their dog or the breed if you ask, but keep in mind you might want to just observe before or keep the convo light because handlers are stressed out trying to get their dogs ready before they go into the ring. If they don't hear the announcer or have their dog ready for the class, they won't be able to show their dog because the judges will not wait for contestants in order to get through all the dogs in time. Havanese people will be hanging out around the ring they are going in about 30 minutes beforehand, there are many rings so you will need to find out which one it is.

Adding to the above, when you arrive, look for the superintendent's table for the judging program. If you know who the super is you can look up this on line. It will tell you the ring time and number plus how many are competing (it'll be in #s- first male, then female, male CH, female CH). Have a great time!

It usually takes a week after closing to get the Judging Program that gives you all the information about ring times, what dogs and how many are in the same ring before the Havanese, etc., will be in the Entry Breakdowns- start looking for that in a few days at Infodog, and you will know before you go.
