Transition - P-pads to outside

Beamer has been peeing on the pads inside since we got him. He always goes on them (except 2 times in the past days.. fo some WEIRD reason..??) He also poops outside 100% of the time.. never done it inside..

So.. what is the best way to transition him away from the pads and do all his business outside?

I'm not entirely sure what to do!

Thanks!
Ryan

Can't wait to read the replies! Rudy went outside from day one, but Rocky is a pee-pad guy. He almost waits to come inside and go on the pad!

Capote's the same way. Since we moved to the house he'd rather go ANYwhere inside than go outside. I've had to start from square one with his training..and he's being more honory this time since he's reached maturity. God I need to get him neutered!!!!!

Okay, we made this transition

It was fairly easy for us, too.

What I did was moved the pad from the laundry room to next to the door that goes to the backyard, and when she would head for the pad, I would pick her up and take her outside and tell her to "go potty". Then, I would reward with a 'top notch' treat (one of the favorite, special ones) and have a big "Praise session" with her and then even run and around and play with her for a few minutes afterwards.

When we would be upstairs, I would watch for her to head to the master bathroom (where the other pad was, but I removed it all together) and I would take her outside and do the same thing.

It worked SO well, that she doesn't even like to use the pads at the office or the hotels! LOL, And I really wanted her to be able to use both methods depending on where we were, etc. But she'll whimper to go outside at the office now.

The only problem I am having......is that when she needs to go potty at home, she will stand at the door, but will be silent! And If I don't see her she has gone to pee where the pad used to be in the laundry room a few times So I need to figure this one out. She hates the doggie doorbell (it scares her) So I may hang some bells?? Dont know yet.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes I found this to be much easier than I thought it would be.

hugs,
Kara

Kara,

Try the bells - this worked so well for Sissy. She caught on so fast and she rings them everytime. She feels so in control - and so indignant if we don't come right away. We didn't play with the bells - we just took her little paw and rang them before we went outside - pretty soon she was doing it on her own.

I will

Which type of bells do you use? I had some bells leftover from the Christmas stockings, but they aren't very loud?

Do the craft stores sell them? I'm not sure where to buy them! lol

I have plenty of ribbon...just no bells!

Kodi will go the the door and bark, but yesterday, he used the bells. He hasn't done it since, but he knows what to do. He's just fresh.

Around 6 mos. Biscuit transitioned pretty quickly from using both the pads and the outside to the outside only. Once he could be safely dry in the house for 3--4 hrs, I was just sure to take him out at that interval. Like Kara, I left a pad by the door, but pretty soon he never touched it. (Wanted to shred it tho! ) At some point I just removed it entirely, and he never slipped up.

HAV A GREAT DAY ! ~~AMY & BISCUIT~~
and HEATH-Y, TOO !
