Sailor is 8 months old Today

Our Sailor is 8 months old today. He has brought joy to our lives after much sadness of Rikky's passing in August. Sailor enjoys playing with our other havanese, Kody, going on walks with Dad, digging up the yard and eating the corners of pillows. He's learned quickly to ring the bell to go out just like Rikky did. I'm planning on a trip to the groomer soon for him, but I was waiting for the hair on one of his legs to grow out. He got sick in November and the vet had to shave his hair to put in an IV. So far, he's great at letting me comb and groom him.

He's so cute, so that's what I have to look forward to. I need to start bell training I keep putting it off. Timmy does scratch on the door to go out but if I'm not in the room I miss it. I hate when that happens. How long did it take for Sailor to catch on? How did you start out with bell training?

In response to the question about the bell training, it only took a few days for Rikky to catch on to the bell, but Sailor took about a month. Kody will rarely ring the bell. We purchased the bell that sits on the floor. I first started them by teaching them with treats to touch the bell. Then every time I would take them out, I would ring the bell with my foot or have them touch the bell. We they didn't hesitate to touch, I would take their paw and touch the bell to ring it. Rikky and Sailor responded well to this and caught on. Not much success with Kody. He only occassionally rings it. He's always been more hesitant. I take the bell with me when we go visit or stay away from home and Sailor will still ring it when needing to go out. Be warned, for awhile after they caught on that you will come when they ring the bell, they will ring the bell for not only going out but for treats, attention, etc. I felt like I was jumping up every 5 minutes but this gets better with time. Others may have different experiences, but this is the way both Rikky and Sailor did.
Here is a youtube video I took of Rikky when he was 5 months old. He would ring the bell to go out and eat the left over food from Beau. We lost Rikky at 18 months due to cancer and Beau 3 weeks later but I still get smiles watching the video.

So sorry to hear about your loss, that is so sad. I hope Sailor is helpful in your healing process.

That bell is awesome, I gotta get one of them. I've been hesitant getting the jingle bell type since my vet has seen injuries with dogs getting claws stuck in them. Can I get one of those bells at an Office Depot, or is it a special dog bell?

The bell we have is the Tell Bell. I think I purchased it from Amazon but I'm sure there are other places. When we purchased ours, you received 2 with the order. My husband glued the base of the bell to a piece of metal to make it more secure on the floor but it works well either way.

Having Sailor and Kody in our lives has helped. Some days are better than others but I have my memories to carry with me always. Thank you for your kind words.
