Bully sticks and other chews

I'm just wondering how many of you let your dog have these all the way to the end? Do you worry they'll choke on that last 2"? 3"? If you take them away...how little do you let them get?

Christy - it is not often that my guys get chews like that, but I never let them get smaller than 2-3" as I am afraid of the same thing you mentioned. I would rather be safe than sorry.

2" inch rule at my house. She has nothing smaller than that. Most of the time she is tired of it by then.

Kara, the catch me if you can is killing me. Smarty always has something in her mouth, that she should not have.

Well I have not given them those but I do give them Flippy Chews (rawhides) and I do take them away when they get about the size of a half dollar...I did get Brutus a Bully Stick and in about 5 minutes the whole thing was GONE...so needless to say we have not done that again.

Erin, forget what I just asked you in my email - I figured it out!! haha I think that just like toddlers, you dont want them to have anything too small in their mouths, unless it is kibble. I have taught LOgan "drop it" and if I say it sternly to him, he will hunker down and drop from his mouth what he has. It has come in handy when he has underwear, socks, leaves, sticks etc in his mouth. His first instinct it to do what Gucci does - catch me if you can - and there I NO WAY I can catch him!!!

Kubrick will get Munchy sticks and he will go through one of those in 10-15 minutes. But since they're relatively chewy, I don't worry about those too much (he only gets them every 2-3 days). I leave him with a rawhide (6") when I go to work and it takes him about a week or so to go through one enough that I will throw it away - basically when it gets to about two inches or so.

Kubrick has yet to go into his "catch me if you can" with something bad in his mouth. So far, if I get to him, I can get anything out of his mouth... I'm just waiting for him to get to his rebellious stage and then I'm sure it will be loads of fun!

Here, the Flossies are almost $6 each and they can last about 30-60 minutes. Not long enough for my tastes!! lol I also take them away when they're just under 2" ...... IF i can get them out of their mouths.

My favorite chewable treats are basic Marrow bones that you get from the grocery store...no one can choke on them because they are about 4 " and hard as a bone...hehe. And brut can break them...everything else Brut will eat a swollow...and I got tired of ticking my hand down his throat to remove chewy toys!!!
