Collar, Harness or Both? Dog License?

So I went to class yesterday where we used a collar. I normally use a harness to walk Timmy. He did fine with the collar yesterday considering he never had one on, and I thought it might be good to use a collar exclusively, but I feel so much safer with him in a harness. So, collar, harness or both (harness for play, collar for work) For those of you with older dogs do they wear a collar with their rabies tags and dog license? I live in PA, I'm investigating dog licenses and I think I need one but might have to wait until Timmy gets his rabies vaccine which won't be for at least another month. Why do dogs have to be licensed? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I don't think that's a dumb question at all. Over the years, I worked out a routine. My dogs never wear collars. Well, I don't take them where they need to wear collars. They wear snug body harnesses - when we leave the house-and-yard. Harnesses go on just inside the Inner Gate; then we go into the baffle between the two gates, and I open the Outer Gate.

The Baffle aids in preventing stupid mistakes (which could be mine), of somebody forgetting to shut the gate. On the way back in, after a walk,we go in the Outer Gate, I shut the Outer Gate, and then take the harnesses off, and open the Inner Gate - or might wait till we're inside the yard, with the Inner Gate shut as well, and then take the leashes off. And the harnesses, too.

There are so many accidents with dogs and collars and hanging tags that I do NOT want to risk them.

But, then, I stopped taking my dogs to dog-classes, which were not very good in my area. I'd prefer play-dates with other dogs, and reasonably-savvy Human DogParents.

Camellia never wears her tags. Her harness is a light color, and I mark on it with a permanent marker; it has my home phone, my vet's phone, and a notice about reward for return. The tags live in my shirt pocket.

Outside house and yard, as my neighborhood has grown immensely, Camellia is always on-leash. Nearly 40 years ago, I could let my dogs off-leash at certain hours in the big park; now, there's too much traffic to do that safely.

Dogs here are supposed to wear their tags, but I value my dog's life and health, and at least I can produce the tags right away if asked.

Where I live the dog license fees are put back into the off leash dog parks, so I view it as my usage fee. It appears to me to be mostly the city's way of checking that a dog has been vaccinated before letting it on city park land.

Chewy is nearing four and she always wears a collar with: her ID tag, her micro chip tag, her rabies tag, and her city dog license. We attach a leash to that for short excursions. We have a walking harness for walks - the leash attaches in the front so it turns her if she pulls. We have a regular harness for other outside activities where she will have a leash on.

The short answer to why dogs should be licensed is that it is the law in most municipalities. Can you get away with not licensing your dog? Many people are lazy, and do. But if there is ever a dog bite, and you can't prove that your dog is up to date on its Rabies vaccine (required for licensing) it could lead to the death of your dog. In our town if a stray dog wanders into the yard, we can call town hall with the license number, and quickly reunite the dog with its family.

As far as collars vs. harnesses, I am a firm believer that any sort of restraint should be a back-up for good training, not a replacement for it. So I believe in teaching my dog to stay with me even off leash, and to have an absolutely reliable recall. But obviously, it takes time to get this level of obedience, and you have to keep a young dog safe in the mean time. Also, even older dogs can have occasional "SQUIRREL!!!!" moments, where instinct overcomes training. So in areas where there is any traffic, you really need to have your dog on leash.

For all formal training, I use a simple buckle collar. Since Kodi is in long coat, I always use rolled leather, as it causes less matting. When we are out for casual walks, he wear a Sense-ible no-pull harness, not because he pulls, but because harnesses where the leash attaches on the back encourage pulling. HOWEVER, even when he's wearing his harness, he also wears a collar with his tags when off our property. His tags include his license, his ID tag, and his AKC tag, alerting people to the fact that he is microchipped.

Kodi wears neither collar nor harness when he is on our property, partially for safety and partially to keep it from damaging his coat.

For anyone who has either a puppy or an adult Hav who even MIGHT pull, I would suggest s no-pull harness over a collar because it will protect their neck and throat from damage while they are learning to walk correctly.
