Thumbs down Pedigree Sponsorship of Show

What do you think about Westminster show dropping Pedigree Dog Foods sponsorship due to "focus on pure breds"? I think it is horrible. The very first dog had to be considered pure bred, the designer dogs and newer breeds are always coming from some pure bred dog...Let's face if if there were no pure breds there would not be "mutts". Although I love pure bred dogs, I think the action to be truly inappropriate...Colbert says it well, I think.

Well if that doesn't make me want to "lift my leg" also. If AKC wanted to promote only champion dogs, they wouldn't register every litter that the puppy mills turn out and all the other backyard breeders. Years ago a friend of mine had a wonderful little pekenese. I thought that dog was top of the line, but after seeing the winner, it is obvious that my friends peke was not anything like the standard. And the havanese shown didn't look a great deal like my Rosie or most of our pups. Who has one whose bangs puff up and part perfectly? Poo on AKC. Those ads have probably gone a long way to finding homes for shelter dogs. George Clooney has one from a shelter. Why not? Until I got my first schnauzer I never had a "registered" dog, but I sure had a lot of really sweet loving ones. BTW I am thinking about going back to Purina Pro Plan for Rosie.

What's really awful is Pedigree wasn't offering the shelter dogs for show -- they were trying to promote adoption. My guess is breeders associated with Westminster feel that shelter adoption competes with purchasing from breeders. I can't imagine that is the case, and this seems pretty dim-witted tom e.

Actually lots of dogs in shelters are pure bred. The records showed that the shelter dogs were adopted in record numbers during Westminister...so it was a good vehicle...

Well here I go again. I told my DH about this when he got home from work. He said and I agree that this was like us sponsering Little League ball teams and having our sponsership dropped by one team because we were sponsering the rag-tag team in the slums. I think AKC can stick it. Besides most of us have our pups spayed and neutered, what is the purpose of sending $25 to AKC after that?

Just to be clear, this was Westminster KC's decision, not AKC, as far as I can tell.

Oops. Should have read to the end of the thread.. AKC lets the local organizations make the decision whether to allow non-registered dogs enter their Obedience, Rally and Agility trials too.

I am told by someone who works on the marketing committee that Westminster tried to get better ads regarding the shelter dogs..Most breeders have seemed to agree with Westminster's decision, saying the committee tried to get better (less sad, tear jerking) ads to run. Their thoughts were that they are celebrating the breeding of pure bred dogs and the committee did not like the Pedigree shelter ads, after all this is supposed to be a fun time. To be honest, I can't watch the shelter ads...it makes me so sad and I turn the channel. I have shelter dogs and I support rescue, I just wish all breeds had a rescue organization as effective as HRI..
