Diego has Kennel Cough :-(

Hi everyone!!

Everything with the house came through alright and we moved in officially this past Saturday!! YAY! Olive and Diego just absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE their new home and their yard!! (And let me tell you, we absolutely love just walking out the front door with the dogs with no worries! Greatest. Feeling. EVER!). :-)

So after we finished moving everything in to the new house, we and our friends just decided to take a minute to relax...that minute became six hours, but oh well. While we were relaxing, our friend had noticed Diego chewing on something and got it out of his mouth for us. It was a piece of plastic-something-or-other that he chewed up into small pieces. He seemed to be acting normal with no pain, tried jumping into everyones lap while they were sitting and licking their faces and what not. Not too concerned that he swallowed anything.

So about 2 hours later, Diego started coughing. Not much...sounded like he just had a hairball and was trying to yack it up. The next cough was a little while later and I felt bad cause he just couldn't get rid of the frog in his throat. Then paranoia set in. I started to calmly panic that he may have had a piece of the plastic thing he chewed stuck in his throat! But he was still breathing, running, eating, drinking no problem. Just coughing.

Yesterday morning, his coughing was so bad, it sounded like he was a smoker who smoked 20 packs in one day and was hacking up his lungs. And about 8 out of 10 times, he'd throw up (or spit up cause it was mostly clear, spit type liquid). He didn't eat any of his food in the morning and didn't want to drink. His personality was still normal, still just a happy-go-lucky pup wanting to relax for a minute then run for the next.

We decided that he needed to go to the vet so Jimmy took him while I stayed home to do things around the house and hang out with Olive.

Jimmy calls me to tell me the vet said he didn't have anything stuck in his throat, but that he had kennel cough.

So now he's on antibiotics and hydro-whatever to ease the coughing. I feel awful. And he wasn't even boarded or anything like that!! So I think the only way he could've gotten it was from a dog at the dog park :-(

BUT, this morning when I woke up to go to work and to take him out for a morning pee (can I just say that waking up and walking out the front door with the dog with no worries is the greatest feeling ever? Oh, did I already say that? Well. GREATEST. FEELING. EVER!) he gave only one little cough, and then we went back in and I let him back into the bedroom to sleep for another hour or so and he only coughed a couple of times on the way in.

I also texted Jimmy this morning to see how the Nugget was doing and he said he definitely wasn't coughing as much as he was yesterday (yay!) but he wouldn't eat his breakfast (boo!) so he gave him a bunch of cookies (yay? boo?) to have something in his stomach to take his meds.

We definitely need to go grocery shopping (haven't done that yet) so we can cook him a bland diet for the next couple of days (and to feed ourselves too)...but I'm just glad he isn't coughing as much!

Well, I hope everyone's weekends went well! I'll try to post some pics of the pups in their new yard sometime soon...just need to find my camera this time around...

Wow, so sorry to hear about kennel cough! Thank goodness it is treatable!

Your new house sounds great . I know exactly how you feel about not having to worry when going outside, or when opening doors in general. I bought a house last June and the thing I have consistently loved most about it is the fenced in front yard (back is also fenced). I LOVE the fenced in front yard. We have chiminea fires at night on our little front deck and the dogs can be out with us. I can go sit out there in the afternoons and evenings and have my doggie company (I live in Florida so outdoor living is year round for the most part, except in summer!).

Anyway, hope Diego gets better soon!

Poor Diego! Hope he's feeling better soon. Moving is stressful enough without that added little bonus.

We just moved from an apartment to a house in November so I feel you on the fenced in yard. I have to say that is my absolute favorite thing about buying this house.

Congratulations on your new home! Hugs to Diego.

Tell Diego I hope he's feeling better soon! I know the feeling. I started out with a cold, turned into a sinus infection, and now I have bronchitis. I just got back from the doctor for the second time in a week, with two more prescriptions, this time for prednisone and codeine cough syrup.

Having your own house is wonderful! I remember when we moved into our first house. We only had a cat then, not a dog, but she was THRILLED with the "new digs".

Diego will be better before you know it... for most dogs, kennel cough is like a human cold. And don't beat yourself up over the dog park... he could have picked it up anywhere.

And finally, WHO IS NUGGET?!?!? We know about Olive and Diego, but I don't think we've heard about Nugget! Did he and Diego come down with kennel cough at the same time, or do you think one could have caught it from the other?

Congratulations on your new home! Sounds like you LOVE it! What caused the worry before?

Get well quickly, Diego. When Augie had kennel cough, he had one bad night, but then seemed to recover fairly rapidly over the course of a week. Is 'the Nugget' one of your names for Diego?

Karen, hope you recover quickly now too!

Thanks guys for the well wishes!! I'll pass them along to Diego later on when I get home :-)

and LOL @Karen, Nugget is one of Diego's nicknames :-) if we get another dog, I want it to be a Newfoundland or a Great Pyrenese or a mix of the two :-) but either way, big or small, Jimmy said no to a third pup :'-(
