Blankets and towels instead of mats and pillows? Or bad digging?

As a recent Hav parent, (Sergio is my first dog) I am endlessly curious about other Havanese dogs and if they have similar traits.

I had visions of Sergio sleeping and resting and lounging in a plush donut bed or on top of comfy dog pillow. Those look so comfy!

However, he never quite took to the dog beds or dog pillows.

In his crate, I had a soft cushioned mat. He sorta scratched at it and tried to bunch it up and move it around.

I took the breeder's advice and placed two nice plush towels in his crate. He loved them.

He prefers blankets and towels, doesn't seem to like pillows or mats or cushions!

He likes to "adjust" the towels and blankets to his comfort, which he can't do with a mat or pillow. He doesn't mind resting up against a pillow, but doesn't enjoy lounging on one.

Does anyone else have a dog that does this, prefers towels and blankets to adjust, over pillows and mats and dog beds?

I think part of it too is that he prefers lounging on MY furniture, my sofa, my bed, instead of his own.

I also wasn't sure if the adjusting the towels and blankets is "normal" or if it's agitated "digging" behavior.

Thanks for sharing your insights. I'm not sure if I'm encouraging bad behavior in him or not, because I laugh and smile at almost everything he does.

whimsy likes the funiture the best especially if there is a throw on there that she can bunch up into a nest type of thing.LOL She rotates herself around during the day from rug, to bare floor, to a fleece blanket on the floor then back to the furniture.( she likes to see me so she picks a spot near by) At night it's my bed, bunching up a throw that's on top of it. She doesn't have a dog bed...the whole house is her dog bed really. LOL

The digging is just nesting... a lot of dogs of all breeds do it. With Kodi, it seems to be the texture rather than whether it is a blanket or a pad. He likes things that are very soft, like polar fleece, the best. I bought him a microfiber throw at Khols for Christmas, and he ADORES that one... a little too much. He can get a little over arroused <ehem> and start humping it.

Thanks for the reply about Whimsy and Kodi. I've seen other dogs just sorta lounging on their own comfy dog beds. My dog likes to rotate where he lounges.

Yes, I can see how they'd want to nest their bed just right. Gucci loves curling into things, I bought her a great bed from front gate that I knew she'd love to sink into the curves of it, but if I through my sweatshirt on the floor (or a towel or a blanket) she'll make that into a bed. i'd always thought it was 'smell',but perhaps it is more than that.

Brody likes 'em all. At work he just has a blanket in his crate (the same one he came home from his breeder's with) and he digs that about. Half the time it is hanging out the front of the crate.

At home his favourite spot is on the back of the sofa, which is very cushy. He also lays on top of his wire crate at home or on my feet. Towels and stuff on the floor though, he views as a toy.

At night he sleeps with me in the bed and loves that too. He likes to make a nest spot between my shoulder, the base of the pillows, and he pulls back the bed sheets a bit and then just nestles in.

Ours all have mats in their crates, but a couple of fleece blankets as well so they can adjust to suit themselves. They do enjoy the beds on the floor in the living room too though. Twinkle especially enjoys the down comforter on our bed in cold weather.

Gabby loves blankets. Since she started throwing her coat, I had to take the blanket out of her crate and just put a pad in. I noticed that after a night in her crate with a blanket, she was matted much more than with just a pad. It must kind of work like when you put a sweater on them, rubs back and forth and causes matting. So, til that is done, she only gets a pad.

Sir Winston and Lady Mia love their beds, however during the day they go to their crates also where they have towels. The crates are left open, so the go in and out. At night they both tend to sleep on the sofa with throws to "bunch up". LM is now in the "spare bed, the older cat has taken over her pretty pink one. LM barks at her but the cat Lady Diana will not move. (Yes, both are Ladies..don't know how that happened)

Sir Winston sez "Non Basta Una Vita.”
