Myositis?

I posted this in health but thought I would post here as well to see if any of you had some insight / experience with myositis?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone

A friend of mine who has a Havanese has been going through some tough times with her boy Duke. The official diagnosis now is that he has myositis - and am wondering if anyone here on the forum can shed some light / share their experiences. She is worried sick.

The dog suddenly got sick and was unable to really move.....they ran lots of tests and blood work and thought it might be spinal meningitis but now this result...they don't know how or why this happened.

He is on prednisone and some other medicines that may have to be 'long term'....

She said on the new medicines he is much much better but is not the same as he was - he is constantly hungry and is not his usual playful self....

Was really just hoping to see if anyone with Havanese experience in this could tell me more....

Thanks

Jemma

Sorry, wish I could help, but I had to google it just to read about what it was in humans. No experience at all.

Thanks Karen

My friend is so worried - Duke was such a bundle of fun and energy and this has really changed him. They don't seem to be able to pinpoint what happened although she thinks it might be related to some vaccinations that he had prior to going on a trip. She doesn't like that he is on the prednisone and the other medicines that might have to be long term but at least it seems he is over the worst of it...

She said he just doesn't seem to be the same dog .....

I thought writing here someone might have something I can pass on to her but it seems to be something that nobody knows anything about :-(

Just very frustrating for her and of course for Duke ....

I'd never heard of it, so I searched, and came up with this link:

http://www.michvet.com/library/neuro...y_myositis.asp

which seems to me to explain it rather well.

I agree that it's too bad that corticosteroids are necessary to treat the disease. I think it would be good to check that this dog has access to a specialist in Internal Medicine - one who would work with the regular vet - to oversee treatment.

Bad luck to have this disease! Don't like cookies that crumble that way - but - sometimes, we get the luck of the draw (as I did with my diabetic Australian Terrier, Kumbi). It looks as though the disease may be manageable, and we could hope it was caught fairly early.

This was the link my friend told me about so I could understand better.....it sounds like it was caught in very early stages but even so will have long term repercussions because of this...

The vet said no more vaccinations etc...

Worrying especially since no real confirmation of the where/why/how ....

I have an auto-immune disease too (RA) and am on pretty heavy-duty meds (including prednisone) to control it too. All my meds have side effects, some of which mean that I have to take other meds.

Auto-immune diseases suck, but whether it's people or animals, so far we don't know enough about them. They are better (by far!) at treating them now than they were 20 years ago, but there are still no easy answers, and no cures.
