Trip visiting

Long story shortened some: Trip was the first stud dog that we started with. He and Twinkle were the dogs we bought to start a breeding program. They are both 15 years old now. Trip went to live with some close friends of ours not far from here 5 years ago. He wasn't happy staying here with girls coming in heat and younger stud dogs.

He's been back a few times for visits, but never stayed long. We mostly see him when we go out on his new family's pontoon boat for dinner cruises.

We're keeping him for 5 days now. He remembered everyone, and the dogs that were here when he lived here remember him.

He slept on our bed when he spent his first 10 years with us, and has slept on the bed with his new owners since. Twinkle sleeps on our bed now, and normally doesn't like to share it, so we tried putting Trip in a crate last night-the first night.

He was having none of it, so we tried him on the bed. Twinkle started to growl, but when she smelled him and realized who it was, she layed down close to him.

Trip was still complaining about something every once in a while. Pam asked me to get the t-shirt that she had asked Gabby to send. I put that down where Trip was. He got on top of it and we didn't hear another thing out of him until he wanted to get up late this morning. Gabby had thought it silly when Pam asked her to send something with her scent on it. Gabby said he was a late sleeper, and he stayed in bed another hour after we and the other dogs had all been up.

They're all such characters, and the characters seem to keep developing as they age.

What a great story, Tom! I'm interested to see if Kodi remembers you all when we visit in the fall. I was talking with a friend who breeds Great Dane the other day, and she recently was visited by one of her "puppies", who is just a bit younger than Kodi, whom she hasn't seen since shortly after the pup left for her new home. My friend was surprised when the now grown puppy immediately recognized her and showed how thrilled she was to see her. I HOPE Kodi remembers you and Pam!

That is a great story!! Thank you for posting it. It kind of reminds me of the stories we hear about elephants and how they never forget each other.

They all remember us, even if they haven't seen us for years, and get really excited. They not only remember us, but usually go completely bonkers. It always surprises their owners, but we would be dissappointed if they didn't remember us.

We raised a pony once, who Hanna won a State Championship on when she was 8. We sold him to another horse family with a young girl when Hanna outgrew him. Ten years later, we were walking the grounds at a Pony Club Event one Friday evening, and heard a familiar whiny from the stable we were walking past. Hanna said, "That's Storm!!", and sure enough it was. There was no doubt he heard us talking, and was calling us. We went over and his new 5 year old owner let us in his stall to pet him. It was pretty cool.

The little girl was a fairly new rider, and Storm carried her very carefully over the beginner course that just had poles on the ground in a large field to a second place finish in a very large class. We were very proud of him, and we were all glad to see each other.

Animals have better memories than most people give them credit for.

Neat thread. I agree, we need to see some pictures. Certainly you're going to have pictures of Trip's vacation to send home with him. Maybe you can post some of those here.

This is really interesting, because our 1st Hav,Dizzie is as happy as a sand boy as long as he has one of my dressing gowns to cuddle up on,he will put up with any thing! When he was a puppy he would cuddle up in my discarded dressing gown. The other thing is before we had the dogs one of our cats had a planned litter of kittens, anyway one of them lives with our grandchildren, and when ever I go around to there's, he goes mad runs up to me,jumps on my lap and fusses with my hair, purring like mad,he doesn't do this with anyone else,it is just as if he remembers me.One of the other kittens went to live with my niece, and he too always appears pleased to see me.And although he a shy cat he lets me handle him.
