Hand play

I am curious, if anyone let's their hav mouth their hand during play?

I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, and before my little 1/2 breed I've only had big dogs, and with the breed I have, anatolian, I was told (and in general), never ever hand play with a big dog. you don't want them thinking that putting their mouth on a human hand is ok.

My little guy has a soft mouth. and ever since he was a pup, I have hand played with him. I will say, he doesn't do it to anyone else, just me. I think if another person played with him as much as I do, he might want to hand play with them too.

The way he let's me know that he wants to hand play, is when I pet him on the head, he opens his mouth. or he might come up to me, and nudge me with his nose. If I stop moving my hand, he'll nudge it, as to say, come back to life please, or he'll lick it. once in a while, he might mouth a little hard, and I'll give an ouch, and he'll lick my hand... what melts my heart is when he wants to play with me, and not one of my other dogs. super sweet.

anyway, just wondering if anyone else let's their hav, mouth them.

I have been known to play like that with Gucci, although she is very cautious to not hurt me, gentle..I guess we're gentle with each other. Not a common game, but sometimes I do, I'll admit it.

I wouldn't allow the kids to do it though!!

All the time, but I cry ouch if she hurts me or gets too rough. If I do a dog like yelp, she stops but it makes her act nutty. I tell her quietly "gentle" while I play and if she is gentle I praise her. Mostly, she is on the gentle side and never has drawn blood. Her teeth do hurt, but not because she is really biting hard. Just I am a wuss. She loves to play that way, and I think it is a natural part of puppyhood. If she had her siblings to play with they would play that way. I am trying to get her to play less that way and if she gets that she is too rough, then she will go find a toy to bring to me so that she can be rougher, or we can play tug, or throw.
My other dog was an austrailian shepard and she never ever bit me and I was always amazed how she could mouth me so gently!

My husband plays like this with our Hav, Toby, and they both seem to enjoy it. Sometimes I have to remind Toby that he can't get away with that with me........so I tell him, "Kiss, no bite!" and he settles right down.

Not very often, because it's something that Kodi rarely initiates. (he was never a "bitey" puppy either) But he has done it now and then when playing wildly. But he never even closes his mouth on my hand. He is very, VERY gentle about it.

No I don't and when my husband starts to play with her like that I tell him to knock it off.
She likes to try once in a while , especially when she rolls on her back and I scratch her tummy, but I tell her no and put a toy in her mouth.

I play with mine like that. Kodi is very gentle doesn't do it often. Shelby loves to grab my hand and pull on it. But she doesn't bite and she stops when I've had enough.

I was just thinking about something similar to this. I do play with Brody in this manner. When he's really hyper he's more apt to want to use his mouth as well in play. He does funny things like he'll come and pick up my finger or hand with his mouth. He doesn't bite hard, just hard enough to lift up whatever. It makes me laugh. If it hurts, then I'll do an "ouch" and "no bite" and he'll immediately change it to a lick. I do sometimes wonder if I should let him do this. I think if he had a harder bite I wouldn't, but he's pretty gentle. He doesn't even destroy his toys.

It is something that I always initiate I guess because she is 5 years old and wayyy out of that puppy biting/ nipping phase, the game usually starts with me, I think playing this with a puppy or younger dog very often could probably develop some unwanted habits.

She is much more aggressive with the 'wolf' puppet we have, she tries to pull his tongue out, its so funny

I like the idea of keeping the dog informed. That is playing the game with rules. Just like tug rules. Their bite inhibition can drift as they get older , so I like to give them feedback by playing these "games". Here's the expert on bite inhibiton. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training...ite-inhibition
