We met a Hav!

While out walking Kubrick today, I decided to stop by the small dog run that we have close to our house, as I do every day trying to get him used to seeing dogs without flipping out (and can I proudly say that it's working... he still doesn't like it when they approach him but he doesn't flip out as much and he actually tries to go after them when they pass - I guess with their backs to him he has more confidence!). So we were sitting on a bench in front of the dog park when this beautiful Havanese showed up. He actually reminded me quite a bit of Quincy! Very cute!

Anyway, his owners were with him and they were really nice and were oohing and aahing over Kubrick's colors. They told me that their Hav (Rover) is 6 months and that at 4 months he was exactly like Kubrick, scared of dogs and would try to run away every time a dog came by. And now he's totally fine with them after a lot of socializing. I told them about puppy classes and they said that if I needed any extra help with Kubrick's fear of dogs, that they would love to have a play date with Rover and Kubrick. They gave me their number and address and I might go tomorrow but if I'm busy sometime next week! I am so excited! I guess it's true that all Havs have great owners!

Oh, that is so great. Line, do you know about Greater NY Havanese Club. I am a member, but have not attended any meetings, because they are always in the city. Check out their website, even though it hasn't been updated in a while. I think it is gnyhc.org.

Michele, I do know about the Club. I'm not a member yet but only because I've been waiting for Kubrick to get all his shots done and now we're going to California for Labor Day weekend and he's going with us and I have 3 different visitors coming over the next 2 weeks after I get back so we're ridiculously busy. As soon as things calm down, though, I will totally be taking him to Club meetings! You should try to come out to the city once and I can have Kubrick meet Kodi and Shelby!

Although I'm pretty sure that I'll see you at Lauren's play date, so no real big loss if you can't make it to the city!

How fun, Lina. At the National two years ago, I met a group of people that were all from the Manhattan area and it seems to me that most of them were pet owners (not breeders). And, with Havanese now up on the top 10 list of dogs in Manhattan, I suspect you'll start seeing a lot more when you go out. (I can't remember if that was a popularity list or recommended list for apartment dwellers.)

Which part of California are you visiting next week?

I am going to visit my hometown of Santa Cruz, and will be staying in Monterey (where my parents live - they moved there after I went to UC Berkeley). I will be going up to San Francisco for a day to visit my boyfriend's nephew who was just born 3 weeks ago. I'm excited since I miss California so much! I love New York, but it's hard to let go of a place where you lived for 12 years! Plus, the Bay Area (both San Fran and Monterey) are such gorgeous areas it's hard to only go back once or maybe twice a year.

I think you are referring to my QuinceThanks!

We have the oohing and aahing in common too---as I love Kubrick's colors! He is a very handsome guy!

That is great news Lina---I'm glad you found another hav owner there to have playdates with!Sometimes it can be just a matter of being in the right place at the right time!I also read Havs are in the top percentages of dogs registered in New York(ten most popular breeds per city)--this was through the AKC.

We just got back from a trip to Santa Cruz and Monterey! It's beautiful up there. I grew up in S. California, but I'd never spent much time up north. My son thought the Santa Cruz Boardwalk was the coolest place he'd ever been (possibly excepting Disneyland) and we all loved the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Enjoy your trip!

Lina, I can understand your excitement! It's great that you met people who seem nice enough that you'd want your Havs to play together.

We were coming from Old Montreal on Monday, driving along, and on a street corner, I saw two dogs walking on leash and let out a "Omg, it's a Havanese!" I was sooooooooo excited!! It was black with a little bit of white, had a long coat and was just beautiful! I would have loved to stop the car and jump out, but you just can't do that in the middle of downtown Montreal. sigh.......... LOL

They are so rare around here that if and when I see another, I'm bound to make a total fool of myself! LMBO

Those towns on the west coast are just lovely. Hubby and I went once in '01 and I fell in love with S.F. and the drive down the coast. Very pretty! Enjoy your trip back home, Lina!
