Chasing cats

Louis loves his kitty siblings! He thinks it's fun to play with them. I've seen him play with one of my cats and it was the cutest things I have ever seen. Just as I grabbed the camera to record, they disbanded. My cat was laying on his side and pawing at Louis' head and Louis was jumping back and forth. My cat wasn't stressed otherwise he would run off. My cats always have the option to run away to a higher place or to baby gated areas that the dogs can't get to.

Today he was crated for a couple of hours while I was out. He had A LOT of energy when I let him out of his crate. He played with some toys, played with his brother (Leroy, standard poodle) - which was also cute, they would walk slowly and stare at each other, stand like a statue, and then Louis would bolt and chase Leroy all around the backyard. He does not play with other dogs, so it makes me happy to see him playing with Leroy, and a big dog at that! Louis will also get on the couch or bed while him and Leroy mouth each other.

Louis came in and had more energy to spare, so he started playing with the cat (cat pawing at the head, Louis jumping around, Louis also lightly mouthing cat), and then they got into a chasing race. My cat ran all around with Louis chasing him. My poor cat realized he couldn't get away from Louis cause Louis could also jump on the couch, and even squeeze behind the couch where only the cat could fit. I couldn't tell if my cat liked this or not, cause he'd run away but kept coming back!! My question is, after this long post, Should I let Louis continue to chase the cats? I didn't stop him till he was going to knock down speakers and get into wires. The chasing game kept him busy. Totally tired him out cause he zonked out on the couch after that (he has a hard time settling so this was great!). I know they say that you shouldn't let small dogs get away with things that big dogs can't get away with - when Leroy tries to chase the cats it is stopped IMMEDIATELY. Am I being too lenient with Louis and turning him into a cat chasing terror?? I've never owned a small dog so not sure what I should do!

Oh, and another thing, Louis hates dogs invading his space and being near him, but today I saw that while Louis was chewing on a bone between Leroy's legs (both laying down), Leroy was grooming Louis' leg by trying to pull a burr out of his hair. I thought it was very cute. And great that they weren't resource possessive over the bone or territory.

Hi Toki,
Timmy is about 6 months old and I have two cats that are sisters both about 6 years old. Are your cats declawed? Mine are not. Zuzu, one of my cats, tolerates Timmy and I do let him chase her. I too have spots they can retreat to if they want to get away. Eureka my other cat doesn't care too much for Timmy so I try to limit confrontation between them. I am ALWAYS on the lookout if he corners them since I know the next step might be a swat with claws out. This type of confrontation can only happen if he gets them in the nook by the basement door and he's never alone with the cats with this opportunity. When this happened very early on and I told Timmy "Quiet, Down". Now if the cats go to this spot he automatically lays down with his head on the ground, tail wagging. Believe it or not the best training opportunity for the cats to witness Timmy is not all bark and chase, is to invite him to join me when I it's feeding time. He knows he must lay in his bed quietly if he wants to stay and get a treat after the kitties are fed. I also have Timmy's old crate in the kitchen because he barks when I get his food ready and I put him in there until he learned he can stay out if he waits quietly. Eureka actually slept in his crate last night and when Timmy came down this morning I could tell he really wanted to bark but he laid down with his head on the ground and did his Scooby Doo imitation, it was so cute. I don't think they will every be cuddly friends but from day one they did accept one another so I feel fortunate.

As long as the cats have a place to retreat (ie table, bookshelf, counter) where your pup can't get to them, I think the chasing is okay. My cat will occasionally try to engage my Hav into a game of chase by pulling his tail when his asleep on the couch. It took awhile for them to establish boundaries with each other, but now they are BFFs. And my cat is clearly the one in charge of the relationship - she decides when they play .

Finally caught some Hav and kitty play time on camera! My cat doesn't look too defensive when he plays, his ears aren't back and his tail isn't swishing around like crazy in annoyance, so maybe he is okay. He retreated to the cat tree after he was done playing with Louis.
