Talk to me about Treadmills

I am looking to purchase a new Treadmill for our working area in the basement. DH is finally about to finish it and I want to start using it as soon as posslbe.

I am looking for an affordable machine that doesn’t take too much space, but do not want to get a match box either.

Anyone has suggestions?
What brand do you have and how do you feel about it?
What should I look for when buying one?
What features do you use the most in your machine?
Anything else?

Muchas Gracias!

Zury

I'd suggest looking at Elipticals too. They don't take up any more space, are easy on joints, and give you more exercise in the same amount of time. If you go that way, look for one that has variable resistance AND slope for a good workout.

I have an elliptical and a treadmill. The treadmill makes a nice rack for my fabric!! Meaning, I don't use it! Like the elliptical much better. There is a newer one I have seen advertised, a cross between a treadmill and an elliptical, that looks like it might be effective. I think it is made by BowFlex. I had a BowFlex, bought it one night from an infomercial in the middle of the night!! It sat here in its boxes for a couple of years. Finally, my youngest son asked if he could have it and I reluctantly let him take it, as I kind of did plan to someday get around to using it. But it has been good for him - he uses it several times a week and has slimmed down, with a change in eating habits, and built muscle. He loves it.

I actually hate the eliptical, dunno why, maybe is the annoying noise it makes anytime that wheel goes 'round...ugh

I am actually planning on getting up 1 hr earlier and work out. I am changing my eating habits, Just finished the first week or not "overindulging in food, but especially in sweets. So far, so good!

Definitely, not all ellipticals (or treadmills) are created equally. I don't recall much noise with mine and I made sure to get a good solid one that does not wobble - of course, it didn't come cheap! I can't just get on the thing and go - I have to crank up some good and loud rock music with a good rhythm so I don't have to 'think' about exercising - I don't especially think it is a lot of fun. And I aim a strong fan my direction too.

I have a problem with sweets too. We watched a program a week or two ago about how bad sugar was for people. Even is a culprit in cholesterol issues. I am like an alcoholic with sweets - once I take that first bite, it is all downhill. So I just can't have them in the house, and I seldom make desserts, although I did recently make a rhubarb crisp. But it is gone now. I have decided if I make another, I am going to get a small baking dish and make just enough for two people so I won't be tempted to go for seconds!

Good luck to you, Zury!

I have to watch myself really close. My father's side of the family has Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Problems & Obesity. My father is in a constant battle with Cholesterol and mine is borderline right now. I am only 35 so that is a bit scary. I am not extremely overweight, but can afford to lose 15 lbs (I am 5.5 and weight roughly 160-162 lbs right now).

I will look into the elliptical again, maybe I need to get a better one. The one I got was my mom’s (purchased from a TV Add in the middle of the night too! LOL). She used it maybe once or twice and then gave it to me. Is not too sophisticated, but It changes strength (does that make sense)? I can crank a knob in the middle and it becomes harder to pedal/walk. It also has the movable handles as well as stationary where it checks my pulse; it tells you how long you have walked, etc.
Maybe DH just needs to grease it?

thank you Ladies, for the help, my husband will apprecaite it since I won't be spending his hard earned money on a treadmill now...

I agree. Ours was expensive, but it makes very little noise, and operates smoothly. I listen to my audio books while I'm on it. There is also a TV in that room, with the idea that we could watch that while working out, but I can't figure out how to work the dang thing, and Dave is never around when I want to use it.

I hate to admit it, but I'm a sugar-holic too. Fortunately, Dave is diabetic, so we rarely have sweets in the house.
