Jasper's first camping trip! (pics)

I was so nervous to take him camping with us!

We've taken previous dogs with us and had mixed results (to be far we didn't start camping until they were seniors so they weren't used to it). When we took Rocky he whined the whole time, in fact I'm pretty sure that we stayed for two nights but drove him back home after one. My old boy Puck would do his loud beagle bark (woo-woo-wooo-woof) at any little noise in the woods. Reese was the only one who used to actually enjoy it.
Back on topic because I'm starting to get choked up...

Anyway, Jasper did just fine. Much better than I thought he would since he gets nervous about new things.
He made it all the way to the campground without throwing up! Once there he was a little skittish at first but he ran around sniffing everything. I brought a tie out for him and he was fine on that, except that he'd whine when he couldn't see me.
Inside the camper he did wonderful! He just jumped on the couch and napped. We brought his crate (he's slept in it every night since we've had him) but when we had all the beds down, we didn't really have room for it without it being in the way. So we took a chance and left him out. No accidents and he mostly just layed on my bed and slept.

We went out for a morning walk on the beach be the lake.

Then for some reason thought it was a good idea to let the kids play in the sand in their pjs.

Jasper reminding me that he's out there and needs to come into the screen room with us.

So he did really good but as of right now he's never ever going with us again.... It's not his fault, it's my husband's.
I'm seriously almost too embarrassed to tell you guys this. Last night (our 2nd one) Jeremy got up at about 12am because his back was bothering him. I was asleep but he half woke me up stumbling around the camper. He went outside to our car to get some ibuprofen and came back in. I was already back asleep. At about 3am I woke up hearing Jasper barking. I didn't even open my eyes, I just whispered "hush Jasper" because the kids were sleeping. As I started to fall back asleep I realized that Jasper wasn't in my bed (Jeremy and I sleep on opposite sides on the camper with the kids on the beds in the middle because we're paranoid). So I sat up and I started whispering "Jasper come here" because it's pitch black and I can't see anything, but he didn't come. Jeremy woke up and asked what was going on and I asked him if Jasper was over there and he said "No, isn't he with you?"
I flew out of bed and out the camper door in my underwear yelling "JASPER!"
He was sitting right by the screen zipper wagging his tail like no big deal.
He must of slipped out the door when Jeremy went out at 12 but he never saw or heard anything.
I can't believe he was out there by himself for that long! In the wilderness!!
I was so mad and scared.
So now I'm worried about taking him again but Jeremy is promising to be more careful. Jasper's just so small and light on his feet that he can easily slip by you.

Anyway, besides the near death experience (that would be Jeremy's not Jasper's) everything went great.

Jasper is just adorable. I have to say, he's one of the prettiest dogs I've ever seen.

Don't give up on him and camping yet... It sounds like HE was a really good boy. Maybe you need to leave DH home instead!

Seriously, we have camped with Kodi since a week after we brought him home. We love having him with us!

What a good protector he was! Glad he didn't find trouble out there on his own.

Awesome pics. Camping is so much fun for the whole family. I know Ruffles LOVES camping, she just doesn't like the trip there. We're taking the trailer out in June. That's the soonest we can make it. I so can't wait!!

Jasper is beautiful. I agree with Karen - take Jasper and leave husband home until he behaves better (doesn't let Jasper out in the night)!

Unfortunately, even as smart and great I think Jasper is, I don't think I'll ever be able to teach him how to change diapers or feed the kids....So for now I have to pick Jeremy.

We will take him again. I'm sure we'll all be more careful after that little scare. Last night when we got into bed, Jeremy was talking about how good Jasper was. In fact Jasper started barking a little bit in his crate last night and I expected Jeremy to get irritated and instead he said "Poor little guy, I bet he misses his freedom."

Well... I can think of a solution... Leave Jeremy AND the kids home!

I love the pictures and it looks like so much fun! We are planning to go camping this summer with dogs and all! yipppe!

I would still take him camping in the future, honestly, he had a chance and didn't even run away, he is pretty good if you ask me. I would just keep him inside the camper the next time and keep Jeremy out! If the kids need a diaper change, just open the door and hand them to him to change!

PS: Gosh I am so happy I had twins and they are almost 9, I only had to deal with diapers once and a loooooong time ago! I do have to say, Enjoy it, althought you may not think so, time goes by way too fast and sooner than you think they'll be running round like little tornados!

And then, before you know it, they're all grown up! My eldest graduates from college in 2 weeks!<sniff>
