Havanese Colors........

What do people in the "Havanese world" think of the breeders who breed specifically for a color - like deep chocolate browns as an example? These dogs also seem to be more expensive and I wondered why ?

I know that Havanese come in all colors and all are considered acceptable.

I am hoping to add a puppy to our home in the late summer/early fall. I am attracted to the cream/sable/red/tan/brownish Havanese. It isn't that I don't find the white or white and black to be adorable and beautiful, but for some reason I would prefer my first one to be one of these other colors. Maybe its because I have a white bichon and a black/white dog now. I don't know.

But are these other colors harder to find? Is there anything else I should be aware of? I don't want to be shallow when asking a breeder for a certain color!! It isn't a must have. It is just a preference. The reason I ask about the chocolate is I read something negative about this somewhere and I wondered what people here knew or thought about this.....

Thanks for any input!

I think you'll be able to find the color you want from a reputable breeder if you are patient. I prefer black with some or alot of white, but often think I'd like one of another color at a point.

Thanks......

Thanks Becky..... It seems the black and white are the most common, probably because that is a dominant color....

Do you think breeders should charge more for one color over another color ?

No, I think a good Havanese is a good one, no matter the color

When it comes time to pick out your puppy the wisest thing is to listen to the breeder and what she considers a good match for your family. I really wanted one that sort of matched izzy (white with grey-tipped with a little black). Thought they would look cute together! Ended up with a chocolate parti, so different than izzy but her personality was what we wanted.

Well actually we wanted one that was out going but got a really feisty one....we love her to pieces. Good luck...their personalities are not defined by color and that is the important thing. I must admit this little chocolate one is adorable.

I really wanted a chocolate color (my labradoodle is a light chocolate and I thought a matching color would be special). however, the breeder didn't have any chocolate pups. In the end temperment meant a lot more than color. I told the breeder my first priority was temperment, second was color and gender was third. After I told her what my lifestyle was like and what I wanted from the dog, she picked the perfect color for me. She's black and white and that's fine with me!

one word of caution about those adorable little red/sable/tanish havs.... almost ALL of them will end up almost all white... havs are notorious for changing colors!!

My Tillie is an "Irish Red Peid" and she has lost almost all of her color except her ears... but if her ears ever get trimmed she will lose that color too.

When I was looking for a hav I did NOT want a black and white... no idea why, I guess I thought they were too 'common' or something, but I was SOOOO wrong! IF I were to ever get another hav I totally want a black and white...

Of course the first thing you want to do is research and find a GREAT breeder and be open to any color/sex and let the breeder match you with the right puppy temperment! THAT is the important part, because typically, colors DO change. a lot.

My preference was a black or black and white because I had always had Scotties. Ted was the closest to black and white but has since become a tricoloured Hav. Brown has shown up on him. I now couldn't care less about what colour he is I remembered that temperment is the #1 importance to me and Ted looks like he will fill that bill just fine!
