What Would You Do? Vet Issue

Ok, so here are the facts:

• You have been taking your Pets to the same Vet for 3 years
• Your Vet has low/affordable prices compared to other clinics
• You have never had any issues with your Vet, he seems knowledgeable enough.
• Your Vet thinks that Raw chicken bones are BAD for your pet
• You discovered during your last visit that your Vet is the owner of the Local Mall’s Pet Store, Yes, they SELL PUPPIES THERE!!!

Would you look for a new Vet even if you have to pay higher prices or would you against your better judgment continue to take your pets to his clinic?

Write him anonymously and ask him why he's selling puppy mill pets.

Ask him what in the world is he thinking and tell him you're leaving his practice and why.

.........and you're telling others in your area that he owns a pet store and where those pets come from.

Actually, I found out by the people standing outside his clinic with signs saying that he sells puppy mill dogs.

I went inside and asked him, apparently, he was the shop's Vet for a few years, then purchased in with another person, the other person then sold his part to him and he then proceeded to close the shop (which is now closed).

I still don't like the fact that he worked there and was part owner, even knowing where those pups came from. I've been toying with the idea of finding a new clinic and have norrow it down to 2 great clinics around the area. Will be makind a decision tomorrow when I call them and talk to them.

I wasn't going to argue with him about puppy mills, etc, no point in beating a dead horse. I am sure he knew by my reaction and questions that I wasn't coming back to his clinic.

I think you're doing the right thing, Zury. I couldn't live with that either.

I even have a LITTLE problem with the fact that the vet that we use for our cat and bird (I recently switched Kodi to a different vet) is the store vet for a Petco in our area. He has no ownership interest, and I have mixed feelings because he's one of only a very few vets in the area who really know birds. I suppose SOMEONE has to make sure the pet store birds are healthy. (Petco doesn't sell cats or dogs, though I'm not at all sure they should sell birds either)

I am staying with the local guy for the cat and the bird because Kodi's new vet is much farther away, and the cat doesn't travel well. And as far as the bird is concerned... he has proved his worth to us there by saving Sunny's life when she was very, very sick.

Zury look at it another way. You say you love your Vet and you apparently trust him with your babies. What would you do if your Doctor of years who you really trusted did abortions? Assuming you do not believe in abortions, would you leave that DR? I have no opinion either way.

Nah Lucille, I believe in the right to choose Life or Death. Even hypothetically for the purpose of this thread, I would still believe the same!

The thing is, he knew they were selling puppy mills dogs when he bought into it, and while he owned the place, he had the choice to stop doing it, but chose not to. That's what bothers me.

As for liking him, I don't really CARE much for him, I mean, what self respecting Vet will tell his patients that Raw bones are bad for a dog, His Tech, who was standing next to him turned and told him, NO, that is not truth. I had to laugh right there, although very unprofessional on her part, It was downright funny the look on his face!

Actually Zury, a lot of vets don't recommend bones. But you're right I wouldn't patronize someone where "do no harm" is supposed to be their code of ethics. Ask yourself if this oath that AVMA endorses , jives with this idiot. ...."I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge."

I think my main question would be this, Is my money that I pay the vet going to support puppy mills in a direct or indirect way? I also think it's possible to find a vet that is just as cheap and more ethical, so I guess I am an other answer. I would not want my money contributing in any way to the abhorrent industry of mass puppy breeding. I think the other thing to think about which would be another reason to change is that if he is irresponsible and heartless enough to treat animals that way, how safe is your baby in his clinic?
