meaty bone??

A certain someone's birthday is coming up and I was thinking to get her a meaty bone from the butcher ... what is the best/safest peice to get??
Marrow bones are too rich and she ends up throwing it up anyway... could I get her like a rib or something and is it even safe being that she doesn't get 'raw' ever??

I got Maddie and Zoey bones from the butcher. I will never do it again. Zoey has a week stomach and the meat made her have the runs. I have never tried raw chicken I think she would like it. I just don't like the thought of salmonella. If you do get one just let her have it for a while and put it back in the refrigerator.

I know a lot of people are really against giving bones but our dogs have always loved them and have never had any problems with them. Not really sure how to answer your question. We can't really stop our dogs from getting them because we butcher our own meat. Avoid chicken bones for sure, they will splinter the easiest. Pork might be a good option. PA had one and he didn't even put a dent in it so I wasn't terribly worried about it splintering (still watchful). Pork might be less rich to for her sensitive stomach! Just my humble thoughts.

I give Rosie bones all the time, but usually they are the steak bones from a T-Bone. I leave lots of meaat on and put her outside with it while cleaning up the kitchen. By that time she has cleaned it enough that I let her take it in the LR with us. Yes it is cooked, but I cut off the thin bone that seperates the two sides of the T-bone and she eats the rest. It takes her days to gnaw it down to where she could swallow it. Since it is laying in the floor , I pick up after it gets pretty small and toss. But don't give rib bones to a large dog, I don't give them to Rosie either. They splinter pretty easy raw or cooked. Her favorite is the round bone from a chuck roast. It has a lot of marrow and doesn't break up. My opinions only. I think it is just common sense about bones. If they are cooked bird bones of any kind, don't give. I don't give any raw either. But beef or pork bones are pretty hard and if your dog is a gnawer then not much danger if any. But some dogns are larger or just have stronger jaw muscles and break them up in no time and down they go.

I haven't seen a pot roast with the round bone for a long time. We used to give those bones to our dogs when we grew up. I wish T bone you are making me hungry! Maybe Zoey would tolerate beef if I tried again. They probably could use some extra iron right now.

Tammy, I would not give a Havanese a weight bearing bone, they are too hard for their little teeth. If you want to give her a meaty bone, a skinless chicken neck would do the trick and she will be able to eat it perfectly fine. Don’t cut it in smaller pieces, leave it whole, if you are not comfortable giving it like that, you can put it in a Ziploc bag and smash it a little bit, but make sure it is not separated (if the pieces are small enough to fit in her mouth, she may swallow it without chewing it).
Duck and Turkey necks are also good to give her.

I am personally too scared to give Whimsy any kind of bone at all. I'm the "over protective Mom "and I aim to keep it that way. That's just me tho....

I've always been to scared to give them any "real" bones, meat or no meat. I guess I'm just scared of the inevitable cracking or salmonella. I don't know. I guess you can ask a professional (which I do not consider myself), but personally I've always been too paranoid.

Zury doesn't the chicken neck make a terrible mess on their face? That is my only drawback about giving them to Rosie.

Tammy if you are afraid of the bones, just give her some chopped meat or buy her a toy.

LOL, okay so NO meaty bone for her!

She'll just get a 'boring' old bully stick I guess!

I am an overprotective mom too.
