considering boarding...

Okay, we have a weekend coming up that is just INSANE and I can not for the life of me figure out HOW it is going to work. I am going one direction, DH and DD are going another and DS is going RVing with my mom and step dad (SO wish I was invited along!!). Anywho, we are trying to figure out the specifics and are having a REALLY, really HARD time. Tillie isn't invited RVing either (LOL) and unless DH and DD stay home with her there is a chance she might need to be boarded for ONE night ... she has NEVER been boarded before. We don't have any of the 'fancy' day care places within a 200 mile radius and I don't know what to do. I have checked out the place I am thinking to take her, it is clean, indoors, temperature controlled, etc ... My biggest concern is that she will be stressed and missing us, will that affect her long term or will she be the same loving girl when I pick her up???

Advise and experiences appreciated!!

We board Panda at our vet. They have good facilities and she already knows everyone there. She is happy to go - and happy to come home, but she hasn't experienced any trauma (even with a 7 night stay). You might want to try day boarding her so she can see the routine, and then she knows you're coming back to get her....

I think it's good for them to be away from time to time. As long as it is a safe place and nobody will abuse them. She may be anxious and miss you, but if it's just one night she'll be fine. Also, it's nice to know you have an option in case anything were to happen and you need to board her again. She may actually enjoy it!

I boarded Rosie a couple of times. The first one was at my vet, just a cage but safe. Didn't bother her at all. then I boarded her for a weekend in Nashville. Indoor kennnel about 8 x 8 so room for her bed and toys and to play. Neither time did she show any trauma or change in any way. However, a beagle told her that she was a dog and not a human child. I convinced her that the beagle just lied.

Tammy, I am not sure where you live, but there was a website discussed on the news here recently called www.dogvacay.com. They provide names of people who will take your dog in their home. I have to say that I don't think my dogs would handle a typical boarding situation well. I would try to look for someone to stay at your home with her or see if you can find someone to watch her in their home.

Karen, I have tried and tried for over a year to find someone to watch her in THIER own and as far as I know there isn't anything available like this in our area. My DH will NOT let anyone stay at our home for security and safety reasons.
Thanks for the link, I haven't looked at that one yet!

Tough one Tammy, the question I have for you though is, will you enjoy yourself if she's boarded. ?

I think I could enjoy myself if I knew she was safe and wouldn't be emotionally damaged by me leaving her...

Do you have something that gives you an idea how she might react.?
