Adding 2nd puppy

Was wondering what information I could get on adding a second Havanese to my family. I have a male, who is one and a half years old and would enjoy a playmate, but don't know if it is advisable to add another male. Was told if they were both neutered it would not matter, but want more advice before I make a move. Any help in that area??

Hi Elaine,

I have two Havs but both are girls. They are 11 months apart in age and they are great pals. You might want to do a search in the puppy area as I think the question of adding a second pup came up recently and should have lots of good information for you.

You are probably right in thinking he would want a playmate. I recently just added a new male puppy to my gang. I got him as a playmate for my 15 month old Tripp. They are best pals. It is really sweet & fun to watch them together. Now i cant leave Jax in the same ex-pen when i leave because he doesnt quite know when to quit! Puppies love to pull & yank just about anything they can get their mouths on!! I have had Jax for just over a month & he is 4 months old. My 7 year old female is just starting to accept Jax. She will play, on occasion, with him(she doesnt play much).

Havanese females tend to take on the dominant role in this breed. The boys are generally 'in love with you' while females rule the roost!!

There are several of us who have 3 or more & we wouldnt have it any other way!! Good luck & let us know what you decide Elaine. We love pictures!!

My first was a female. My second was a male and they became boyfriend and girlfriend from day 1. She was the Alpha and he was more passive.

My third was a male. They did not like him right away and it was so sad, because he's the most mild manner little guy. It took my male about a week to play with him and my female is just warming up after 7 months! The 2 boys absolutely love each other! They play so hard together. The key was my 3rd is very submissive and laid back. I was very clear with his breeder, about needing a submissive male. I love my girl, but my boys adore me! If you get another boy, prepare for an adustment, but it's worth it!

My first was a male. He is gentle (except when they play), sweet and a little shy. He is my nerdie boy. My second is a female. She is the more aggressive one, a streetwise chick. But, she is also the cuddler and she is very whiny.

They are 11 mos. apart in age. It took them about an hour to be friends and they get along great. In fact, if Shelby is playing with another dog and Kodi thinks it is getting rough, he will step in to protect her.

The male Havanese are wonderful. They are such lovebugs.

If you want to get a second, a male could be a really wonderful playmate for your first Hav. A female will most likely take on the dominant position, even if she is spayed. Either way will probably work out just fine, but it is usually the owners who get 'weirded out' by all the dog dynamics, the heirarchy.

My first is a male and much more dominant and aggressive than the 2nd. My 2nd is a sweet female, 10 weeks younger and petite. She is smart in a way that many female humans are--let the man think it was his idea.....

What is your male's personality? Are you considering a specific dog? What is the personality of that dog? The breeder can be helpful in this situation.

My sweet Barney is certaintly not agressive. He was shy when he came to live with me and has become my "constant" companion. I know I spoil him, I take him with me everywhere possible and he follows my every step. We just doggie sat my son's five month old YorkiePoo, and the two of them played so hard they had to take rest breaks. Barney is laid back and a good sized Havanese, weighing close to 14 lbs. The breeder had talked about if it is good to mix female with male, but she keeps referring to breeding them, which is not anything I am interested in. So, I think from all the wonderful answers I've received here, there would be no problem getting another male. I know I love my dog with all my heart and would expect to feel the same for another sweet little guy. Thanks to all! And if I can figure how to load a picture of Barney, will do.

I think perhaps it is a good idea to add the second Male. he will act like a training aid and best friend all at the same time. I would love to give Radar another Hav...perhaps at a later date when he's fully reliable and then he can have someone to push around and look over as well.
