New NJ Law about pets in cars

Now that summer is here and you may be taking your dog in your car more often, I just wanted to let anyone in NJ (or passing through) aware that they will be cracking down on any unrestrained pets in your vehicle. The fines are pretty steep as you will not only be charged for each pet but also animal cruelty.

Be safe!

Col. Frank Rizzo, police superintendent for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was not messing around last week when he warned drivers in New Jersey to make sure they restrain their pets when they're in the car. Under state law, those who are pulled over with unrestrained animals face fines of between $250 and $1,000 per offense:

I think that's a great idea. Timmy started out in a car seat but I recently switched over to a seat belt harness. Not only is this obviously safer for the pet but for safety of others in the car as well. I ofter see dogs in the back seat going from window to window as the car is moving and wonder how they don't go flying off the seat if the car has to stop suddenly. I was certain Timmy would be a flyer projectile if he wasn't properly restrained.

I was just watching the Brady Bunch and they all piled into the station wagon to head to the grand canyon- and NO seat belts!! It just cracks me up.

I just upgraded their seats to the XL solvit sherpa bucket thingie and they really like it.

Think THAT's bad... when my aunt was a baby, my grandfather jury-rigged a SWING in the backseat of the car to keep her happy and quiet while they were traveling!!!

Henry has been riding around in his harnessed carseat since puppyhood, so we are in compliance.
Though, my groomer here did tell me the police were waiting outside of her shop, just waiting to ticket.
I also think it's good that little dogs will be safe in vehicles now in NJ.

I am sort of chuckling here because in Montana we are just trying to convince people that they should not ride around with dogs in the back of their pick-up trucks. A conversation about the NJ law would generate some interesting discussion!!!
