Twinkle playing Toto 10 years later!!!
We used to be heavily involved with our local community theater when our kids were young. When the theater got in financial trouble the surefire way to bring in big bucks was to have musical with lots of kids in it. Kids bring parents, grandparents, and all their friends to buy tickets.
It was decided in 1997 to stage The Wizard of OZ. Pam was appointed Stage Manager and being the good parent I was setting an example for our kids, I auditioned for the Lion knowing full well that the Director wanted the part and that I would have no worries about having to sing and dance in front of thousands of people in a lion costume............I got the part. Buts that's another part with funny stories but this is about Twinkle.
They had a Cairn Terrier that looked exactly like Toto in the movie but he would not stop pulling on the leash and bit Dorothy a couple of times. Pam told the director that we had a dog that could probably play the part. Twinkle was 8 months old then. She loved it and did a GREAT job.
We had 70 kids, remember we needed the families to buy tickets, as munchkins. The kids stayed back in the dance studio when they weren't going on stage. Twinkle would go back and entertain the kids but when Pam called for her on the intercom backstage she would come to the Green Room. After a few performances Pam stopped needing to call her. She knew by the monitors backstage what was going on and would show up in the Green Room on her own on time.
She quickly learned her part in every scene. When the Winkies came down the aisles to the stage Toto would bark once and let the Lion hold her mouth shut right at stage front-every time.
Anyway fast forward exactly 10 years later. The theater is in trouble again. We haven't been involved much since our kids are grown and gone but we got a phone call asking us to come to a dinner/meeting so we went. They wanted our help. I told them I didn't want to play the Lion again (by the way I'm still called over there Tom "The Lion" King) much to the relief of the same director. They asked if we had a dog who might could play the part of Toto. We said that Twinkle would love to have the job again. They were surprised that she was still alive and even asked if she was physically able--to much laughter by us.
She's ready to go. She'll be eleven when the show opens.
