Question What's with this all of the sudden whining at night?

Duncan has started a new thing over the past couple of nights. He hangs out with me and hubby downstairs and then when it's bedtime we take him out for a bathroom trip and in the crate he goes. One of us is always going to bed at the same time.So for the past couple of nights, right when I am on the verge of falling asleep he starts to whine and whimper.Several times I have gotten up and taken him outside thinking he has to go,but he just lays down on the grass. He does this at all hours.Last night was the worse,he started at 11:30pm,then again at 3am,then again at 5am.What gives?? He is acting normally, playing around, and he gets a really long walk after dinner.
Am I missing something here?Anybody ever have this happen with their pup??
Thanks for any insight!
Dot

I wonder if he is hungry. I have noticed that Logan now whines a lot during the day. And it comes when he is hungry, has to go potty or is upset because one of his sisters is upset or wanting something. He normally does not do this at night, but all day long.

LOL!!!!!!

Yep.....that would definately work.

I haven't had this problem, but I hope someone can help you out. It sounds like he may be wanting to sleep with the pack, if he's not hungry!

You might want to check if he gets too hot in the crate. Last few days we had really very hot weather here and he was very restless throught out the night and wanted out of the crate. I took him out and he wanted to lie down on our deck or hard wood floors. Finally, I let him sleep in our bed and he settled happily. Last couple of nights, it's been cooler and he was back in his crate and slept through the night without any fuss.

Hope Duncan settles down and sleeps through the night.
Best,
Poornima

The Whining sometimes will happen if they get excited at bedtime becauase they haven't been worked out enough for the day and they are not tired. Radar will get like that sometimes when he hasn't had enough excercise and he's worked up at the end of the night. He eventually gets to bed but it's a real chore sometimes.

I think "hot" is a great thing to check- jasper can't stand the crate if it is too hot. I agree with exercise too. But I find my boys have a hard time settling down unless we are all up in the bedroom together. If one of us is still downstairs they are restless. Maybe try having the last one up bring Duncan to bed.

Hi Dot,
Casper uses the grass to cool himself down when he is hot, I wonder if Duncan is getting too hot at night. Can you put his crate in a cooler location? I have actually lower the temperature at night in our house for Casper, he doesn't sleep well if our bedroom is warm.

Thank you all for your thoughts. We got a bigger crate,b/c he had a hard time stretching out.Now his cage is much bigger so we'll see how that goes.I did move his crate to the other side of the bed and now he'll be on hubby's side.
Hubby thinks the crate is way too big,but I won't go there.(ladies,we know we always have a sense of certain things, and know we're right!LOL!!)
Anyways,he got a little more at dinner,a nice walk and now hubby is roughhousing with him.
I'll keep ya all posted.
Just for fun,I have a neighbor who is a "dog psychic"and she says Duncan is part of our human family and being that he is going thru some kind of transition in his life, the crate is no longer acceptable for him.She suggested a pillow/bed for him to sleep on.She also asked why we crate him and I told her that I didn't want to find pee all over the house and let him have free reign while the family was asleep. She did understand, but said once he is 100% house trained I should look into getting him a pillow/bed for the bedroom.
It was really strange when she called me after petting him and playing with him for a bit.Kind of freaky as well!!!!
