Ah, puppies.

I swear Jinx is channeling Odie from Garfield. He even looks like him. Here's an entertaining Jinx story for you.

Both of the dogs were really difficult to potty train. At 7 months, Jinx still doesn't have it. Both my husband and I are at home most of the day, so we take the dogs out every few hours. Jinx still finds a way to go in the house between being let out. I don't want to crate him all day and I know he will eventually get it like Gryff did.

All this week, my husband has been away with my son at scout camp and I have been working from 8-12:30 at the gym. I decided it would be in Jinx's best interest to be crated. I know he can hold it because he does all night long while sleeping on our bed. His puppy crate is too small for him, so I put him in Gryff's bigger crate. It's been working great all week. Yesterday afternoon though, I came home and found feathers in the crate where he decided he would ruin the feather pillow under the fleece that keeps the dogs so nice and comfortable. It wasn't too big of a deal, I cleaned up the feathers and put the pillow on the hamper in my closet....

Today I went out for an hour so I didn't put Jinx in the crate. What I failed to do was close my closet door. I came home to a room filled with feathers!

Nobody to blame but myself. I can just envision Gryff shaking his head saying "I don't want any part of this."

He might need supervision around down or feather pillows and comforters. I had a Husky who loved to rip them apart..we always had to shut the bedroom doors and no pillows on couches, if we forgot the whole room was filled. Of course your guy is small but don't let those cute pupply looks fool you.

Although you don't want to crate him, you should probably not give him free rein of the house until he is completely house trained.

If you do not have an ex-pen, can he be limited to a room which he cannot damage such as the kitchen or a larger bathroom?

Do you have baby gates to keep him and your belongings safe?

Is he peeing in the house or pooping, too? If he is just peeing, you may want to try using a belly band with a Poise pad to absorb the urine. That would protect your floors.

Supervision really isn't the answer with the potty training. He is such a happy, playful puppy that sometimes I can't tell if he wants to go out or is just playing. For instance, he had gone out about 90 minutes before and then he was all over my friend (who was sitting in a chair watching the Olympics while eating some food) and me while I was sitting on the floor scanning slides onto my computer. I though he just wanted either her food, or my attention. I leaned back and my shoulder got wet! He peed right there on the floor next to the two of us. Lesson learned. Always err on the side of taking him out.
