Ticks

Miller got a tick today. We are not in the city, but at our cabin and its in the woods/ocean. Miller likes to go sniff around with his head in the tall grass and today i guess he did that, and low and behold he got a tick right on his nose. I pulled it out with tweesers and looked at it under a old microscope and i got it out head and all. Has anybodys havs ever gotten ticks and if so, what do you do about it?

Unfortunately, we get a lot of ticks around here. I do what you did... pull them off, though I usually just use my fingers! You can put a little dab of antiseptic ointment on it if you want. Just keep an eye out for unusual symptoms in the next few weeks. He's PROBABLY fine, but ticks CAN carry nasty diseases, and which ones depends on where you are. You can look it up on the internet by region.

The good news is that, caught early, all the tick borne diseases are pretty easily cured with a course of antibiotics.

when ollie was a pup, I thought he had a little poop on his booty. so I got a tissue and started to pull it out of his fur. I noticed though, the more i pulled the harder it was to get the poop out. wierd eh. then i let go, and looked at the poop again, and it was wiggling it's legs. he had a tick on his ass... so I did a steady pull and it finally let go, it was in one piece and alive. crushed it. I'm not squimish at all. but ticks gross me out.

Around here we are asked to bringthe ticks to a vet to be checked out.

Around here, if everyone took every tick they pulled off a pet to the vet, the vets would have people lined up out the door and would never have time to see or treat a dog!

Lyme disease is just starting to show its face up here, so they are trying to get stats on it.

We used to get them a lot, but it hasn't been as bad since we put the fence in our yard. I think that keeps the deer out (why bother jumping our fence when you can just go in the neighbors yard instead). I did find a blown up one crawling on the couch yesterday (yuck)! I have no idea which dog he was on. I just pull them off and watch the dog to make sure they don't show any signs of illness after having the tick. Right now, I am keeping an eye on 8 dogs to make sure they are all okay since I have no idea who it came from

The vet hasent said anything about tick or flea meds, so im thinking they arn't a big problam here. Miller likes to stick his nose right up under the leaves and tall grass and dirt, and thats where the tick was. Lise, your thing at the bottem of your message has a canadian flag on it, what part of canada are you in, where in vancouver.

Yeah, around here, Lyme is endemic. It is so common that 60% of dogs have seroconverted by their 3rd birthday. The way vets in this area handle it is that dogs are tested for the 3 or 4 most common tick borne disease annually. If they show up as positive, they are treated, whether they show symptoms or not. And, obviously, if someone comes in with a sick dog who tests positive, they are treated immediately.

Knock wood, Kodi is still negative for all. But short of keeping a dog indoors ALL the time, there is no way to completely avoid ticks around here. I've found ticks on Kodi in Dec. and Jan. IN THE SNOW!!!

This season hasn't been too bad here either. But the problem is, the biggest vector for deer ticks isn't deer, it's mice. And fences don't keep mice out.
