No more dogs at Home Depot???

Everyone went to HD the other night, and while looking at the washers and dryers an employee told me that only service dogs are allowed. Shocked, I told her HD has always allowed leashed dogs, it must be a new policy. She responded no, it's not and that she's been there for 9 years and it's always been that way. I checked the front if the door and there was a sign for it. I just didn't appreciate the rudeness so I'll just go to Lowes with Hanna. It's right next door to them.

Where I live dogs aren't allowed in any store, leashed or not. It would be very unusual for a non-service dog to be allowed in any store or restaurant. The only exception is Petsmart which is the only pet store I've seen that allows leashed dogs.

I've taken Maccabee into a couple stores with me and have not had any problems, but he's either been in a front pack (when he was smaller) or in the shopping cart. I did put him down in a coffee shop in Scranton, PA last weekend, but only after all the shop's employees made a big fuss over him and I knew he was welcome.

I live in the South so there are a lot of people with a dogs are working animals that need to be working or at thought process, that is changing I have noticed the more up scale stores don't say a word and at places like home depot and Walmart Garden (outside) it depends on the person. The one thing you need to be aware of in stores like home depot and Lowes is they sometimes use bait for mouse/rat control, I ask about this and it is up to the manager and depends on the level of infestation.

Robbie, Boo Boo, Yogi, and Misty's human.

HD is or used to be a suggested place for owners to socialize puppies. I am now reading that it goes by individual stores. Lowes remains open to leashed dogs. Someone also recently mentioned that Michael's allows dogs in their shopping carts. I think it's pretty obvious that most stores and restaurants don't allow dogs, that is not news to me and I've never seen a pet store that doesn't allow dogs.

Move to New Paltz, New York!! Henry and I go everywhere in our town - the drugstore where the druggist comes out from behind the counter to pet him, the post office where he makes friends with everyone in line, the bank where they always let him in the tellers area and give him a treat, and the outdoor tea garden where he sits on a pillow in a chair and the waitress brings a him a bowl of water! His favorite place is Lowes where all the salespeople know his name (it's like "Cheers" for Henry). Our little Havs are so cute that no one in my town can resist them!!

I take Benjamin everywhere, too, except for restaurants. Even grocery shopping, I've been putting him in his soft sided carrier, which disguises him pretty well, then put that in the cart. He is so quiet that a lot of the time no one knows he's in there, and when the employees do notice they exclaim about how cute and quiet he is. I would think there is a big difference between a dog in a carrier in a cart vs. a dog of any size walking around in the store. At any rate, if we are ever asked to leave of course we will leave, but so far we've gotten away with it!

In our area, both HD and Lowes have signs that specifically say that service dogs are allowed. They do NOT say "only" service dogs. I've never had a problem in either one, and I'e been in them around here, up in NH and in Maine.

When we were doing our reno, I spent HOURS in HD, with Kodi sitting either on my lap or on the floor beside me, while we worked out problems with runners we were installing on our stairs and in the upstairs hallway. We had NUMEROUS employees come up and ask questions about him, pat him, admire him, etc.

I think you got a nasty employee with a thing about dogs. HD's are a dime a dozen. Find another one in another town nearby, if you need something you can't find at Lowes!

That was totally uncalled for! I have worked for HD for 14 years and all the stores in our area have always allowed dogs (that I know of anyway). That is where I socialized Ozzie and it is still his favorite store. At my store there are dog treats in every department (3 kinds at my desk!) That associate was rude and I would report her and make a complaint to the manager. I would also call the customer service number (800-466-3337). I will double check tomorrow but I'm pretty sure that the sign on our door says leashes required but nothing about service dogs only. This could be just a case of one associate being an ass and I would hate for you to think we are all like that! We actually have a community board at the front of the store with pictures of all of our "regular" dogs on it, and yes...Ozzie's picture is up there too Here is my Awesome apron!098.jpg

Please let know how it all turns out
