Staying in a hotel with my dogs

I just booked a trip next week and for the first time I'm bring both dogs with me. The hotel is a "pet friendly inn" in Maine. I'll bring a crate for the little one (since she likes to get into things) and food, toys, bowls, etc. My big dog tends to be a bit of a barker, so i have her citronella collar to try and avoid that. I'm quite nervous about having the dogs in a hotel.

Any advice? My little one isn't completely reliable with housebreaking, so i might bring some spray carpet cleaner and odor remover to clean up any accidents.

Anyone know if shops in Freeport Maine are pet friendly? I'd love to take at least one of them with me shopping. Hopefully it will be a cool cloudy day so i can bring them shopping and leave them in the car. The hotel doens't want you to leave them alone in the room for more than an hour at a time.

My experience is that the Freeport shops are NOT particularly dog-friendly... LL Bean certainly is NOT.

If I were you, I'd work VERY hard to make sure tour puppy doesn't pee on the carpet, even if this means confining her to the bathroom or her crate unless she can sit in tour lap. It's really hard for people who come after you to have places in the room that have been peed on. Believe me, the dogs can smell it!!!

Don'tknow what to tell ou about the barking situation... Kodi doesn't bark if he's crated, and he's always crated if I'm not in the room. In fact, most of the hotels where I've stayed with Kodi requirethat dogsbe crated when you aren't in the room with them.

I have no advice, just wanted to wish you good luck with everything!! You said you were quite nervous about having the dogs in a hotel ... was leaving them at home not an option??

This is a last minute trip, i live alone, so no option to leave them home. This is a vacation and my dogs are part of the family so only makes sense to take them. THey will come with me rather than being left in the room. If the weather allows it then I'll do some shopping, if it's hot and or sunny then I'll spend the days hiking or walking with the dogs. If i get some shopping in early in the day when I can leave them safely in teh care then I will.

My little one hasn't had an accident in weeks and is fairly reliable, and she will be crated at night and when I'm not there, but think i'll bring the cleanup stuff just in case. You never know in a new place how she'll react.

You might want to check and see if Freeport has an law about leaving pets in cars. That has become the law in many cities recently.

I had rather take my two-year old grandson who is a holy terror on vacation than take two dogs. I did not go anywhere with Rosie unless I went to my children's houses. Really I didn't go anywhere for vacation--only business trips or to the hospital. As much as I love her, it is not worth it to me to not be able to ramble around the antique shops and we love to eat at wonderful restaurants or go to the movies or a play. I would get a babysitter for any of those activities so I find a sitter for Rosie most of the time or stay home.

I believe LL Bean is open 24 hrs, so you could definitely go ther when it wasn't hot or sunny.

I'll probably arrive around supper-time, go to the hotel, then go out for some take out. Then take the dogs for a walk, then head to LL Bean while it's cool. I've emailed a local doggie daycare to see if they can keep the dogs the next day while i shop. The other plan is to just go on a light hike with the dogs and skip the shopping all together! I'm flexible. If this goes well I'll take the dogs on vacation again. If it doesn't then it won't!

I think the doggie day care is a good idea if you're going to be out for a while. If you leave the dogs in the room for a while, make sure they have already cleaned your room so no one will be coming in, bring a crate for both and cover it with a towel or something else, turn the tv on, it will mask some noise. I think you've thought of everything else. I go to dog shows and my dogs are often in hotel/motels. This works for me. When you are there, like me, I imagine the dogs will be out of their crates.
