Havanese - Did You Know?

From the AKC web site:

Havanese Did You Know?

The Havanese is AKC's 142nd breed.

The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and the country's only native breed (Havana = Havanese).

Despite its being a new breed to the AKC, the Havanese is an old breed, descending from breeds brought over from Spain to Cuba.

The Havanese was once called the Havana Silk Dog or the Spanish Silk Poodle.

The coat of the Havanese is deceptively warm-looking; in reality, it is an insulation and barrier from the sun and overheating.

The Havanese descends from the same ancestor as the entire Bichon family, the Tenerife.

By the mid-eighteenth century, the Havanese was so popular that it was owned by such celebrities as Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens. It became known as the dog of the aristocratic class of sugar barons of Cuba.

Nice research Kimberly!

The Havanese were also almost wiped out during the Cuban revolution. They used to exist in large numbers, but only survived the revolution thanks to their devoted owners taking them with them when they fled to the US or Europe, which is why the breed is now in those areas.

Great info, Kimberly! How fun.

I think I'll go give my Spanish Silk Poodles a big hug right now!

This is so interesting... I need to do some more research myself. I went to trader joes and bought dora's little peanut butter cookies. The guy there asked me what kind of dog I had and I told him Havanese. Of course he then asked what mixes they were. I told him it was a cuban breed and he told there were no cuban dogs- he said if there were, THEY ATE THEM! I didn't know whether to laugh or run and I just well she is a Havanese and left! My husband said he was just pulling my leg but I wonder the truth behind that!

I think I am going to write that up and have it laminated, like a business card. Then, when people ask me what is it, I can just hand them a card. We were in Cape Cod for a few days, and we got a lot of "what is that?" and then "what is it mixed with?". I also got some "what cute Shi Tzus".

I would have to say that when I did tell people they were Havanese, about 1/2 knew of the breed and were very happy to see them in person. I had one french speaking couple who were so delighted to see two Havs up close. They kept saying over an over how beautiful and happy the dogs were.

My dogs brought a lot of smiles to people they met this past week. There was the lady who said Shelby looked like a Disney character, and she was walking a French Bulldog. I told her maybe our two dogs could star in a Disney film together.

Michele, you just reminded me of the security guard at the B Match that I took Piaget to on Friday. When he saw Piaget he said, "I had one of those," and I just smiled at him. He added, "and I bred it to a Bulldog... and you know what I got!" and he started roaring with laughter. He thought he was so funny, so I just smiled and continued on my way. It took a bit before I realized what he thought was so funny. Doh.

And yes, I love how our dogs almost always bring smiles to the faces of other people. It makes the world seem a lot friendlier and less harried.

Amanda, unfortunately, there is a lot of truth to that history. It was that way in Cuba and several other parts of the world. If I recall correctly, parts of Europe lost a lot of their dogs too. People couldn't afford to keep them and used them as a means of survival for themselves.
