feeling like a bad mom

Well, last night I took DJango out for last call. I closed the screen door to keep the bugs from getting into the house and as DJango finished doing his thing he ran up the deck stairs and right into the screen door. Didn't realize I had closed it. Bounced pretty hard off the screen. As soon as we got in the house, I noticed a small trail of blood, picked him and his back paw was bleeding a bit.

I got a warm wash cloth and tried to clean it, couldn't tell if it was the pad or nail. He didn't seem to bothered by it. We went to bed, got up this morning and went for our usual walk. All was good. Came home and soaked his paws in warm water to make sure they were clean. When i was getting ready to head out for the day, I poked a little bit by his back paw to see if I could see anything and he growled at me while pulling his leg towards his body. Obviously it hurts. I got him off his pillow to go outside to pee and he couldn't put any weight on his back paw.

Of course i feel terrible about this, it's my fault he ran into the screen door. Taking him to the vet at 2:00 hopefully it's just a bruised paw or maybe a broken fingernail.

I know from reading your posts that you are an EXCELLENT mom to Django. Accidents happen, it's not your fault. I hope everything goes well at the vet.

Aww poor guy. Don't feel bad, these things happen. You're an excellent doggy mommy.

don't beat yourself up..maybe it's just a small splinter from the deck. Those can really get sore quickly and aren't very noticable to the naked eye.

Well, I just got back from the vet. He has a bad cut in between 2 paw pads, very painful and his toe nail is broken way back towards the toe. They had to cut the toe nail off, wrap his foot after dressing with an antibiotic ointment.

I need to give him 6 days of antibiotics to avoid infection and give him a paw bath once a day to keep area clean. Dress it with neosporine and put a baby sock on to keep it clean and keep him from licking it.(good tip from the vet) no walks for the next few days. should take 7 days to heal just in time before I leave for vacation! why do these things always happen around that time? LOL

I have to carry him everywhere, he won't put any weight on his back leg, does this funny hopping thing. He's resting comfortably on his fav. blanket and he also had a little dinner. I guess it could be worse! Good thing I took him in.

It was just an accident. You sound like the perfect Mum so don't be so hard on yourself.
