Question Is Florida Dog Friendly?

We are going to Boca Raton, Florida for a week in December, and we are bringing our Hav. How dog friendly is that area? Are dogs allowed in shopping centers? Beaches? Patios of restaurants?
What would be some fun places to go with him?

Check the web. They have lots of info on dog friendly places. Dogfriendly.com is one, or just do a search for the area you are interested in. I know there are Florida people on here, so maybe they can help.

Diane -

I live on the West Coast of Florida and unfortunately do not know how pet friendly the East Coast is. Florida has so many dog shows all over the State so I would assume that they are pet friendly over there (I know we are on this coast!).

Michele's suggestion about trying dogfriendly.com is a great one

Diane,
I know alot of the beaches on the east coast are not pet friendly...you have to drive up to Jupiter (North of Palm Beach) to find a beach that allows dogs. I am not too sure about Boca. If you check PetPages (pet Yellow pages) they have a list of restaurants that will allow dogs in their outside areas.

Thumbs up

Hi Diane,

I live here in Boca but my Lily is only 4 mos. and I haven't really tried to check out too many places yet. I did find a website that provided a lot of info: http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/tr..._Florida.shtml

I am more familiar with Fort Lauderdale which is just 15 minutes south of Boca, I would recommend taking the drive down there and hitting Las Olas Blvd. There are lots of outdoor restuarants and people bring their dogs. In Boca there is an area known as Mizner Park, they may also allow dogs, but I'm not sure. Hope this helps you.

Or you can drive 40 minutes and come to South Beach, Lincoln Road is one of the most dog friendly spots, I've visited. Also we have a beautiful tres chic shopping center called Merrick Park, which allows dogs in their stores, our favorite is Nordstrom. I think Mizner Park in Boca is also dog friendly. Oh, and in the North area of our county (Miami Dade) we have a lovely town called Miami Lakes where the local dog clubs meet on Friday nights for social events. There's lots of shops and restaurants, dogs are welcome at outdoor cafes only, and not allowed to sit in the chairs at the table. It's lots of fun to see the Bull Dog Rescue Club meet with all their dogs. Ft. Lauderdale has Riverwalk which is a lovely place to sit by the water and watch the yachts with your dog, they have a beautiful path and many people to watch as well.

Hi Diane:

I am from NJ but I have a home in Boca . . . I wish I could get down more but I still have to work and pay the bills. We will likely be down the week between Xmas & New Years. I am in West Boca just south of Yamato.

I do not believe they allow dogs on any of the beaches in Boca. There is a nice park off Yamato in West Boca. I agree with the posts above regarding Riverwalk, Las Olas and South Beach - all very nice places with outdoor dining. When it was just Javi - I carried him in a purse and the only place I was ever stopped was going into Walmart - my father-in-law's friend gave the security person a mouthful - it was pretty funny. Now that I have two, I use a stroller . . . sometimes they walk, sometimes they ride but if you want to stop at an outdoor restaurant the stroller works great. Hubby was not really happy about the stroller . . . He wouldn't walk with me for the first couple of outings.

I do want to add one word of caution, you need to be aware of the gators. I know that someone in my development lost their yorkie to a gator who wandered into the lake. My father-in-law lives off a very wide canal . . . he has a beautiful yard that overlooks a preserve on the opposite side of the water . . . you see lots of canoes and kayaks in the canal and the birds are spectacular but there are often gators. I would never leave the kids off lead anywhere near water in South Florida. (I would actually never leave them off lead anywhere unless they were truly under my control and it was daylight - we have foxes, bears and coyotes in NJ.) I put the equivalent of a leash on my son too when he was a toddler

I forgot to mention that we have a lovely boat parade in Ft. Lauderdale around New Years, it's something you shouldn't miss. People dress up all kinds of boats and float down the Intracoastal Waterway, lots of partys also in honor of the parade, or you pack your cooler, grab chairs and get a spot near the water to enjoy the evening.

Thanks for all the tips and ideas. Just checked on the Fort Lauderdale parade -- it is Dec. 15, before we come.

We will be in Boca from December 19-28, if anyone wants to get together for a Hav playdate.

I don't know my exact schedule yet. We have lots of friends and family and it is always busy around the Holidays. - We should definitely try to get together. Let's keep in touch as the time gets closer.
