Grooming help please

Hi everyone I am sort of new to this forum and got my first hav in March this year. He is lovely, and gets along like a house on fire with my other two dogs. It's just a shame they are so rare! But yes I just came to ask....
How do you groom your havanese? I brush him everyday and he gets bathed often (but not too much). He is frightened of spray bottles, so I need to get him used to them as I have heard it is better to brush a wet havanese. Also keeping his eyes clean is quite hard. I wipe them with cotton wool dipped in lukewarm water, but It doesn't really help. Any suggestions? Oh and also once I brush him his fur is matted again in about an hour. Any help is much appreciated.

It looks like you will be a steady member on the forum for awhile because there are lots of tips for grooming your Hav. Enjoy the reading because you will now you will be here for a long time. My Hav are 2 and 4 and I have been grooming them myself and enjoy it so much. It takes time to learn.

I'm growing out my 1/2 hav's coat. it's been an adventure. he's always been sassy when I comb him out. straight comb, metal. I don't brush him ,just comb. and I wash him once a week, unless he gets into something icky.

I don't use a spray bottle. just dry and comb. some tricks I've learned, to get tangles and mats out, is hold the hair on the skin side and tug toward the skin to counter act the pull of the comb.

and sometimes I 'tease' out the mat, from a small corner with the close tines of the comb. like my mom would tease her hair in the 70's lol!

I use a long metal comb on my guys. This way I can get right down to the skin. I do not wet the fur, as that makes it harder. I use baby wipes on the eyes and then comb out the gook! Works pretty well!
