Slamming down the phone...

This is what a friend of mine just did when I told her that I just purchased a new Havanese puppy from a breeder. My friend thinks that I should have gotten a shelter dog instead, but I told her I wasn't interested in a pitbull or a dachshund. I got the puppy I wanted with the characteristics I wanted and I didn't want to be guilt tripped...what would you have said? Meanwhile, Dot is delightful and the perfect companion for Beanie...

You wanted a Havanese breed for your other Hav. You are guaranteed the looks, personality, and pretty much the size. Just let it slide, change the subject when brought up.

Thanks, Linda...good advice. Irony is, that I had found a rescue Havanese, but the folks who had the dog, even with HRI's help, wouldn't release it to me because I didn't live in the area...Anyway, I have two perfect Havs now..

I had that debate with a friend of mine who is against breeders. I told her responsible ethical breeders are not the reason dogs are in shelters. She needs to be mad at the puppymills. Responsible breeders have a buy back clause, so their dogs are not in shelters. Oprah did a show on puppy mills and even the guy from the rescue agreed, responsible breeders are not the problem.
Not all people can rescue. I never had a dog before my 3. So I didn't feel I had enough experience to deal with a dog with issues. When you rescue a havanese, it might have issues and you never know if it will have the temperament of a havanese. Who knows what the parents were like etc. Also, when you rescue, the pup might have tons of health issues. Maybe someone would feel more comfortable buying from a breeder who does all the health testing and has a health guarantee. I don't think it makes me a bad person because I chose to buy my 3 from a breeder. I just didn't want to deal with a puppy with a lot of issues.....end of story. There are a lot more havanese in rescue than when I was buying my guys. I would consider rescuing a puppy, but would be concerned about health issues. Buying from a breeder doesn't mean you won't have health issues, since I am proof of that, but at least you have a breeder behind you. Bella for instance had a liver shunt and the breeder paid me back what I paid for Bella.
People can get a little crazy when it comes to rescuing.

I had a similar experience. Never spoke with her again.
Really, no one's business but yours.
Glad Beanie and Dot are getting along.

A pretty fair percentage of our puppy buyers are people who have had one or any number of rescue dogs, and come to us looking to improve their chances of getting a healthy dog, not to mention one that doesn't shed all over the house and smell like a dog.

The best response I've heard to this question is-

"Do you have kids?"

"yes"

"are they adopted?"

"no"

"i could ask you why you would do that when there are children that need homes, but that's rude and none of my business"
