Getting New Puppy

Well we finally decided on the Havanese and get our puppy tomorrow. A few quick starter questions. We are going to crate train and was wondering what size we should get. He is 6 lbs right now and the breeder believes he will be on the larger size when grown(around 16lbs). Is the wire cage or PVC type preferable.

Any other tips would be appreciated as we want to try and do everything right. We also have 3 and 6 yr olds kids
Thanks

Congratulations! You are in for a wonderful ride!!

As to the crate, what has the breeder used? I know most people use the wire crates, but I have used a canvas, collapsible crate for Beau (16" x 21") since I brought him home at 12 weeks. After a year and a half, I finally replaced it -- with the same thing -- because he did manage to scratch through the mesh at one opening. I like this crate because it is so easy to move from one room to another and to take with us if we're visiting somewhere. It really has become his den -- and we haven't closed him in to it in over 9 months. As for size, this crate swamped him as a puppy and still leaves him lots of room now that he is 13 1/2 lbs. If you are interested, google "noz2noz."

By the way, we need to see pictures of your new baby!

I prefer the wire crates because they breathe better but it is mostly personal preference. I put a towel over part of the back portion, with some old towels in the back, so if she wants shade or a more cozy feeling she can curl up there but can still feel the fan.

I also like the ones that have double doors and a divider, so you can start small and then increase as he gets bigger.

CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby and welcome to the forum!!!!

We have always used a wire crate, with a big towel draped over it, and it is kind of 'back' into our closet, so she feels very cozy. It is her safe place. But, we rarely move it. If I had to move it often I may have chosen something different, it is VERY awkward to carry.

When we got Momo, we just used the travel crate given to us by the breeder. Then, as she got bigger, I got a larger travel crate. Eventually, I got a wire crate and like that much better. It's around 24", I believe. Then, when we got Ume, we just got another 24" with a divider and kept expanding the space as he got larger. Since he's pretty much potty trained now (although if it rains, all bets are off), he's at the full expansion. I put a blanket around each of the wire crates to keep it den-like and to prevent them from seeing each other at night.

Donnie, Momo and Ume's mom and loving it!

I have had both plastic crates and wire crates for Kodi. He started refusing the wire crate, and now only wants to use his plastic ones. I would prefer the airiness of the wire ones, but I figure it's his choice!
