Markings vs. Points?

Regarding coat colors, what is the difference between "markings" and "points?"

I would think markings STAY with the dog not drastically changing, while 'points' can easily be cut away and will NOT come back. Like Tillie had black tips on her puppy coat, but the first time she was trimmed down that black was gone. forever.
While her "markings" with a WHITE collar around her neck, white face, etc will most likely always remain. At least that's how I understand it...

It's my understanding the difference is that markings are random, but points occur in a specific pattern. Think dalmatian vs. doberman. In Havanese, we can have tan or silver points and the pattern is eyebrows, underside of ears, muzzle/cheeks, legs, and chest/belly (it seems like I'm missing something, but can't remember what). Markings can be anywhere.

HTH!
