Shy guy coming around

I wanted to share how Louis is blooming with his personality. When I got him about 8 months ago, he was very shy and scared of people - mostly men. I guess it just took him some time to settle in.

Here are some instances that has surprised me:

a) My FIL came to visit one weekend. Louis went right up to him, stood on his hind legs against my FIL's legs as my FIL petted and scratched Louis on his body, head, under the chin, everywhere (usually Louis would not approach, or he would cautiously and duck away if someone tried to pet him). When my FIL stopped petting and moved away, Louis followed him and stood on his hind legs again for attention.

b) My FIL was sitting on the couch looking at his laptop. Louis came over, JUMPED UP on the couch right next to my FIL. My FIL petted him, and then Louis sat next to him. My jaw dropped! Louis refused to share the couch with my husband for a while when he was first with us.

c) We had a bunch of people over for a pumpkin carving party. Louis was fine with everyone. We went outside to look at the lit up pumpkins, it was a group of people and dark. I turned around, and saw my friend's 12 year old daughter just holding Louis. My jaw dropped again! He doesn't like kids!

d) We stayed at a hotel this weekend. Louis snuck out of the hotel room like a ninja. We LOST HIM!! I tried to stay calm, but my husband was freaking out. We looked on our floor and outside. We were going to do a more thorough search outside and I went to talk to the front desk. We were scared because there is a busy freeway right by the hotel. My husband passed some stairs and there was Louis sitting on top of them. He called for him, Louis came over, and my husband picked up him. Everything was fine. Louis had an adventure on the second floor of the hotel. He usually doesn't just run off like that, but I guess he thought he was at home! Crazy dog!

I am seeing Louis gain more confidence and it is refreshing! Well, except him running off.

He is a companion dog by breed, he will like people. he might not like all people, but you know, that's reality.

as for dogs, he may widen his array, in my book, you want to see that he's eager to greet and greets nicely. he might not like what he smells....

Ollie, he got beat up in puppy class by a lab mix (male), to this day, he no likely labs and lab mixes (boys). doesn't like their energy. so he'll greet them just fine, but if they hover over them, he will stand his ground and give a pretty good sized growl to tell them to back off.

Ollie is a ladies man, and loves all female dogs.

He growls at every dog at the dog park. I understand he dislikes the dog park, so I don't take him there anymore. I babysat my neighbor's pom for a couple of hours in my house. I thought Louis and the pom would get along. They are similar in size and she is female. I've never see him growl so much and SHOW TEETH! His growl kept escalating until he was barking. He did not want her near him. Or maybe he did not want her near me. He kept growling when she was sitting next to me. She is very high energy, so maybe he didn't like that. He tolerates my friend's 70lbs Border Collie mix, but when he gets out of hand (hyper), Louis will bark and growl at him. Louis only likes my poodle, which is good, and maybe he likes him because they live together, but my poodle is the only dog he will interact with and lay down or sit next to. Either Louis ignores dogs, or growls at them. I am sure with the right dogs, he will like them. I'm just happy for the small victories with his interaction with people.

Halloween

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween!

To continue with the theme of this thread, I wanted to share Louis's first Halloween experience. We pass out candy while we sit in chairs in front of our house. It's just a lot easier this way with two dogs, otherwise we'd have to deal with the doorbell ringing constantly and us having to answer the door.

I did not have Louis out in the beginning because I did not think he would like it. I imagined him getting scared, barking, and growling at the kids. He is scared of children, and them being costumed and running up would be too much.

Well he proved me wrong. I brought him outside later with my poodle cause I felt bad about him being crated while we were outside. Louis was not only social, he WANTED to interact with the kids. We eventually hung out with our neighbors and there were 10 or more kids around - all in weird costumes to a dog. Louis was trying to get close to them to sniff and practically walk off with the kids. He was being nosy and trying to get in the middle of all the kids when they were getting candy. Several kids acted like your typical children, staring, baby talk, reaching over his head. Louis ducked, but not ducked out of the way, and once he realized they were just petting, he was being pushy and wanting to get their attention when they stopped. He did not bark or growl! I am so surprised.

We then went to another neighbor's house to visit. Louis was really great. Just laid on the couch or stayed next to me. My neighbor commented how well behaved he was. I think it helps that my poodle is overly social. I see Louis acting unsure, but when he sees my poodle seeking attention, Louis copies him. I guess he is learning he enjoys the petting and attention. Go Louis!
