He lives to guard me!

I think I have figured Henry out. I think he sees his sole purpose in life as my protector. Whenever someone comes to the house he is first out the door to bark and send the alarm that MOMMY A STRANGER IS HERE!!! He won;t stop until I actually HUG the person! I have had to hug every UPS guy, Fed Ex guy, my lawn guy, and even a gigantic sweaty mason who came to fix the chimney the other day. And it's like magic. As soon as I hug, he starts wagging his tail and wants to be their best friend.

I dont want to get too personal, but he does it to my DH too. When he leans over to give me a snuggle, Henry is Johnny-On-the-Spot - sticking his face between us and wriggling in and separating us. Then he licks my DH all over his face, but I think he is trying to keep me for himself.

Does anyone else sense this about their dogs? That they are keeping you as their private property? Maybe it's because I am his food source? I'm hoping Dave or CarolCarmella will weigh in here with some expertise. Where is CarolCarmella anyway?

Yup! Quincy is the same way. I don't have to hug anyone yet, but I do have to at least go and stand by them and then reach down and give Q a pet on the side to let him know that it's okay. The only time Quincy barks is if someone comes into the house. He hasn't tried separating hubby and I yet, but I'm waiting for that to be next LOL. He could be sleeping somewhere in the same room as me and the minute I get up to go to the bathroom or get a drink, he's right there with me, bleary eyed and all.

Boy, Nancy, you had me lol about all the hugs you've had to give out. Wow, what a friendly girl you are! They must be kining up at your door. My Tyler isn't that possessive, but Bailey, whom I lost last year at 15, was very "sticky". He wouldn't let me go anywhere without him at my heels. He actually got kicked several times (by accident, of course) as he was so close to my feet. Poor Tyler, every time he came over to me, Bailey would come over and push him away. Tyler has been alone for over a year now and he is finally beginning to become a Velcro boy. He no longer has any competition. Neither one, however, required me to hug strangers, thank goodness.

Nope, don't have to hug every Tom, Dick & Harry. Assuming DH is the understanding type...

Hmm . . . Now that might improve my social life!! Lucky, lucky me. Beau just seems to make best friends out of everyone who comes to the door.

Always knew you were friendly Nancy . lol . This is an interesting question as it goes into two catagories I think. First is the barking issue which is typical alert type barking, something we've actually bred dog's to do as well as being an inate reaction to most dogs. I say this because he usually stops with the hugs lol. If it were a socialization problem , he probably go on longer. Nothing wrong with alert barking as far as this being a problem. The interesting second issue is whether this is a jealousy /protective issue. It is quite typical for dogs to react to the hugging ,especially with their owners. This gets into an area of jealousy (which is a controversial issue with dog ethologists) and resource guarding. I have an article here , and you can descide lol http://www.associationofanimalbehavi...d_monster.html thanks for this interesting story. Hugs Dave lol

Thanks so much Dave. You are the greatest! If you were here I would hug you! And why aren't you here anyway? I want you for a neighbor! Ivy is down the street with Henry's BFFs Gryff and Jinx. He barks like a friggin lunatic when they come over from pure excitement. I hug Ivy but only because I want to.

Lol, Nancy! That must get interesting! Gosh, wish I had thought of that when our Internet guy came couple of weeks ago! He was pretty cute! McGee would not start barking for the first several minutes and then he wouldn't leave him alone!!
