I always get teary when I see pictures like this. There were a lot of them from NJ & NY too, the poor animals always look so confused.

Even worse are the pictures on Facebook of the dogs that have been found roaming after the hurricane and they are looking for the owners or fosters. I want to help every single one, they look so scared.

I was reading that they learned their lesson after Katrina and all shelters in NY and NJ were not allowed to turn away animals. Many people in Katrina refused to leave their animals and then had to be later rescued.

Katrina, really taught us a lesson as many of the people that perished were elderly who refused to leave their pets behind.

Sorry to say that isn't true :-(. They cannot all accept animals out of concern for people who may have allergies and for public health code reasons.

I'm in Suffolk county, Long Island that there are only two shelters that accept pets. Since Suffolk county is more than 50 miles long, and is made up of barrier beaches as well as the mainland, they are not very close to most people.

My niece looked at a sight for where she lives and there were two shelters accepting pets but you had to have a kennel, and one wanted rabies record.
