Question Do you guys use Frontline and Heartworm meds year round?

My vet said to keep using the Frontline till around Nov,since we go upstate alot and as far as Interceptor(for heartworm) we can also stop in Nov,and then restart in the spring.
I was just curious what other vets may have mentioned to you on this topic.
Thanks!

Dot, my understanding is that the need for both of these depends on where you live. We don't have fleas nor mosquitos in the winter, so we quit using them then also. However, those that live farther south may need to use one or both all year around.

My vet said to keep up with the Frontline until the end of December (so that it lasts through January) in case we get some freak warm days like we did last year - remember the 70 degree days in January?

As far as Interceptor, my vet says to use it all year round. Now I'm wondering if that's too much since yours says to stop for the winter...

The vet here said the same thing. Problem is, critters don''t always die in the winter. In WI it was you should have it year round. In NE where the winter is super milder it's till November. The math doesn't add up! For my families peace of mind as well as for the health I would do it year round. The extra $$$ is worth it too me!

Yes us too, we were told we could take a break from Frontline in January, and February (we sometimes have warm decmebers) --- but to keep the Interceptor going all year round.

Amy, when you stop getting bit, the dogs usually do too. I am hyper sensitive to bug bites, so that is how I know when they are free & clear for a couple of months.

It's unbelievable, Kimberly, but I've never seen a single flea or tick on this dog---and he's white!---even though we walk in dog and deer-infested grass every single day. We have tons of deer around my house. But no mosquitos or biting bugs at all. I only get bug bites at Tahoe (where they make up for it, the little vampires. ).

My vet says you can stop the Frontline after Nov. but to continue the heartworm meds year round. If you don't, then a heart worm test is needed to make sure they don't have them before starting back up in the spring. I give it year round so we don't have to have the test.

I use Revolution, which is both flea and heartworm med'n., from April until late Oct. or so. We do the same for our cats and have never had fleas on them or in the house - as far as I know! EEEK!

With the warmer winters, we'll have to see how this year goes. Man, when you're buying for 4, that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!!!! $$$$$$$$
