Crate recommendation!

What size crate do you use? Isabelle ate thru and ruined her crate at Leslie's house (you can't cage a maltese!) and I need to order new crates. I think I am going to get the girls their own crates this time instead of having them sit in one together. What size does everyone use? This isn't for overnight, etc. Just when I am training or at a dog show, etc. I think I am going to get soft sided again cause they are so much easier to transport- call me silly! But the last metal one Belle squeezed herself thru!

Thanks,
Amanda

P.S. www.dog.com is having a sale right now!

She's a chewer and you're considering a soft-sided? Eeks!

I don't know the official size (200?), but all of my crates are approximately 17H x 24D x 17W. I've measured so many times that I'm just recalling the numbers off the top of my head. It isn't accurate, but close.

By the way, I agree that the soft-sided are much, much easier to transport. If I take a hard crate with me to an event, I generally walk the dog(s) and carry the crate empty because it is just too awkward otherwise.

The Midwest Canine Camper is my favorite for travelling. Sam has the 18x15x16 size. A word of caution, if Belle is determined she maybe able to get out of it.

Amanda, i use Marchioro Clipper Aran(they have many different kinds) crates. They are very well made & i am really happy with them. I have 2 different sizes depending on what i am doing. You can get them from Amazon but i think i got them cheaper at pet chauffer.com. Sorry, they are not soft sided but here is a picture(you can open them from the top also).

Kimberly- you are probably right. Soft sided is fine for when I am there but I probably need one like Shannon's for when I can't be right there. Especially with the California shows being outdoors! Thanks Shannon. Debbie, That is the brand I had and I loved it until Isabelle realized people were eating food and she had to get out. This is after I tied all the zippers, she just simply went thru it! It did last me almost 2 years of using it 4+times a week between shows and training.

Thanks for the measurements too. The last crate was so big, everyone teased me about the "dog hotel!" that I carried!

Dora is really good about just settling down in her crate and taking a nap. Belle paces and freaks out. I have never been successful with her just sitting in a crate- If I had to do it over again, I would have crate trained her from the start!

Desi and Nico each have size 200 (I think) wire crates, the ones that are 17 or 18 x 24. Nico also has a plastic PetMate KennelCab, medium size, that he inherited from my kids' stuffed animals (don't ask). Nico used the plastic crate exclusively until we got Desi last week - he moved to his wire crate only because it was right next to Desi's and they could see each other really well while in the crates. Until then he refused to use his wire crate but loved his plastic crate. Neither is particularly easy to transport, but the plastic crate is easier, IMO. Nico rode in his crate in the car until we got him his Lookout carseat, and when we went camping his plastic crate always came along.

My husband saw a soft sided one in a pet catalog and had to order it. I told him he was throwing money away, but when someone gets a thought in their head, they're going to do it.
We took all the dogs with us to a show, including our standard poodle. She had to stay in the hotel as she wasn't showing and was in the soft sided crate. Before we even got out the door after putting her in it, we saw her walking across the room in the crate. She was using it like a hamster wheel.
I think the size that some use for shows is a 100.

Oh Jan that is too funny, a poodle wheel LOL.

Amanda when I was at an outdoor agility trial I saw some people using these, I loved them but yikes on the price.

A lot of people also just had x-pens with a mat under it set up for the day, I liked that idea it gives them more room.

Good luck shoping.
