Dog Shows

Hi, I've seen a couple of dog shows on Animal Planet recently. Last night they showed the Havanese breed winner during a commercial. They just showed it briefly when the show came back on. Why don't Havanese dogs do well in shows? They always pick poodles, miniature and standard, spaniels and a short-haired pointer. Why even bother with dog shows? Why don't they just give the trophy to an English springer spaniel and save the rest of the aggro.
But seriously, why don't Havanese show better? I think it's because judges aren't familiar with them, or maybe it's because they have a "natural" coat, judges think they aren't fancy enough to compare with a dog like a poodle, maltese or shih tsu.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Carol

The Havanese's are doing quite well in Canada. Top dog in Canada for 2006, All breeds, is a Havanese. MBIS, MBISS, CAN/AM CH. Sonrisa's Tiny Thomas. Breeder Rita Thomas.

PS. Nice to see you back Carol

I'll tell you something that happened to us at a show. It was the very first time my husband ever showed and he took BOB. The judge thought he was a professional handler and when the judge looked over at me and saw how happy I was, he asked my husband if he was showing the dog for me. My husband made the horrible mistake of telling the judge that it was his first time ever in the ring. That news was given to all of the judges in that 4 day show and after each show, we'd ask the judge why they did or didn't pick Bandit. (She took BOB all days except one where she took BOS). One judge told us that while she was a great bitch, we'd have to earn our way into the group picks and that would mean having more ribbons behind her. I think the same thing holds true for our breed. We're pretty new to AKC and the breeds that win the large shows are ones that have been in AKC for many years. The judges are still pretty new to our breed and some don't even understand our standard.
