Latest Jude photos

Jude got the last of his puppy shots today; tomorrow he starts puppy class. Since I'm not totally sure how much Havenese he has in him, please feel free to let me know if he's looking more like another breed. The vet has him listed as a poodle mix, but then poodles were the original "half" of the Havanese, so that makes sense.

I've never heard that poodles are the original half of Havanese (or even close). That said, I don't think your guy looks much like a poodle... his hair isn't even curly. Looks like he's at least PART Havanese to me! Cute as the dickens, whatever he is!

Looks like a Hav to me!! He's soooo cute!! Enjoy puppy class! It was a wonderful experience for Beau. By the time we finished, he didn't have an ounce of shy left in him!!!

They're not my dogs -- I'm their person

He is very cute, no matter what he is, but he does have the Hav look.

Thanks, all! I think so too. The first time I became aware of the Havanese is because Jude looked (at that age) exactly (right down to the dab of white on his chin and on his chest) like this photo of a Havanese I found on the net when I was researching poodle mixes. Here is where I found the info about the possible poodle (or maltese, or bichon) mix in the Havanese:

http://www.ironrangehavanese.com/Havanese-History.php

"Many believe the dog is related to the Bichon group, but there is debate on which part of that group. The AKC cites the Bichon theory. Others believe the breed ancestry includes the Toy Poodle and/or Maltese."

I love this history behind this breed. . ,.

His last picture with the grass behind him really looks like a Havanese to me. I'm confused what a Havanese is really made up from. You can have a DNA test done and find out what breeds are in your sweet baby. But if you hadn't mentioned it I would say he looks like a Havanese . It would be fun to put a picture of a black havanese right up next to yours and see what the difference is. If any. I came very close to buying a Havanese mix before I even knew about Havanese. They were charging the same as a pure bread Havanese. The mix was Coton de Tuléar and Havanese. They were a bit larger than a Havanese and the coat I think is a bit curlier? I think Coton de Tulear's are trying to be recognized in the AKC ?

Actually, that is a photo of a pure breed Havalese - I posted it because my sweet baby boy looked exactly like this pure breed puppy at about the same age. Here's some photos of Jude when I first got him. . .

Even that version of history doesn't say they are half poodle, though. They are actually quite UN-poodle like in most ways. Also, that history talks about Maltese as if they are somehow distinct from the Bichon group. "Bichon" just means small dog, and Maltese were originally called "Bichon Maltese". They dropped the Bichon out of the name to avoid confusion with the Bichon Frise.

In any case, none of that really matters in regard to your little cutie. Was he a rescue? If so, from what I've seen, rescue groups and shelters just make up something that sounds plausible when they "assign" a breed status to a dog or puppy. Few of them even know what a Havanese is. If he came from a shelter or rescue, I can almost hear the conversation now...

"He's little and fluffy, but he has too long a nose to be a Shih Tzu or a Lhasa."

"So what do you think he is"

"Well, Poodles have long noses, and a lot of them are small."

"His hair isn't curly enough to be a poodle though... Let's list him as him a poodle cross."

Exactly, Karen! When the vet assigned his breed as "poodle mix" I thought, hummm. I had a pure breed toy poodle years ago (a great little dog by the way - i think the poodle reputation, like the pit bull, should be regarded with a wink to the owners) and he didn't look anything like a poodle. I started researching poodle mixes - boy there's a lot out there, seems the poodle has been the "poodle and (name your breed)" quite a bit! But that's when I found out about the Havernese - like many, I had never heard of that breed - but the more research I did, the more Havanese photos I looked at, the more I read about the characteristics and behavor and the more I watched Jude, the more I was convenced that he was, at least, part Hafvanese. I got him free - so I'm a very lucky, and proud, humom!!
