Meeting Havs

So, I've been doing lots of research on dog ownership and several breeds. The Havanese, Cotons, Poodles, or Maltese seem to be good matches for us, at least according to what I've read. However, we have yet to meet one of them in person, except the poodle. I'm considering borrowing my sister's Pom (Beep), who she has offered to let us borrow for a week, so that we can get a taste of dog ownership, and taking her to the dog park in the hopes that their may be a Hav or Coton their. Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

Glo

You can search for a local club for the breeds you are interested in. the clubs usually have local shows our meet-ups you can go to. Maybe there are breeders who will let you visit.

good for you doing your research so thouroughly!!

When we were searching for the best breed for us, I actually contacted several breeders and we took a weekend and went and visited 4 different breeds. I had also never seen a hav in person before, but when we did, we ALL knew this was THE breed for our family! In fact, the breeder had a young adult available while we were there that we loved and had exactly the temperment/personality we were looking for, but we didn't have the $$$ saved yet and weren't prepared to bring home a dog! lol
Definitly call around and see if there are any breeders near you that would be willing to have you come visit and see what they are like as ADULTS. Because as you know ALL puppies are adorable, but it's the DOG you'll be living with for 15 yrs you need to see.

Thanks guys, those are both excellent ideas. We are just taking our time to properly prepare. It saddens me how many people just go out and get a dog without any forethought or consideration of what's best for everyone involved, including/especially the dog.

The Hav, Coton and Maltese are all members of the Bichon family and probably very similar in needs, especially grooming, and temperaments, Jeannette, I don't know where you live but chances of finding any of them at a dog park are slim, I would say. I think the others that weighed in before me gave you excellent advice. Don't leave it to chance because there don't seem to be many of these dogs "around "the neighborhood", so to speak. Good luck with your search.

I agree with all the advice given above and also want to throw in another suggestion. Try taking a walk around your local PetCo/PetSmart - I don't know how many people we've run into there that said they were interested in a Hav but never met one before. Also, if available, talk to a trainer or maybe groomer in your area and maybe they know some Havs and could 'set you up'.
